CV Joint fail

Hello,

last night I had to leave my car 100ks from home because of a failed CV joint. I will get it towed home this week.

Is this a common problem? or signs of another bigger issue?

also wondered where I would best go to find replacements?

any help appreciated.

Thanks Greg
Greg,

Never had a CV joint fail but I have had the bolts snap off after they worked loose - basically the same result except I just removed the offending drive shaft and drive about 450kms home.

Helps having a syncro!

Cheers,

Skot

Common - yes
Cause - loose bolts, damaged boot, cheap joint.
Always buy GKN/lobro joints.
Always use 12 point 10.9 bolts.
Getting joints is easy, finding good boots is getting hard.
Which shaft is it? Skot is on the money, remove the shaft and save the tow charge.

Hello
Just had the same problem as Skot described on Saturday. Was at the dump, went to take off, Bang--- no go. At least I know my De-coupler and VC work work fine.

Bruce CQ

PS Take plenty of rags when you remove the shaft as there is plenty of grease.

I should have called this CV joints for dummies.
More questions sorry

Cause - loose bolts, damaged boot, cheap joint.-
If its still bolted tight to the diff then likely cause is damaged boot and dirt getting in and cutting it out??

Always buy GKN/lobro joints. -
If I went to the local GKN stockist would I just ask for T3 Syncro CVs?

Always use 12 point 10.9 bolts. - Can I re use my old bolts if they are still tight now?

finding good boots. - Do you have any suggestions. Not knowing a good one from a bad one.

Which shaft is it? Passenger side

To remove the shaft I undo the bolts off the diff and it just falls off?? or is there more to it at the wheel end?

Thanks again

You can use your old bolts. They are good quality it is just that the allen key hole tends to get flogged out (clean out the hole before inserting allen key). Just kampers sell 12 point ones. I would buy 24 and remove both shafts. Disassemble both shafts, clean and inspect all joints. No point fixing one and having the other three go in quick succession. If you find a local gkn stockist make sure your wallet is nice and fat before you go in. If you want to save a buck order from the states, get four or six, cry once and reap the benefits long term. You need to undo the bolts at both ends (assuming rear) and remove the shaft, put the shaft in a vice and work from there. Use your Bentley or vw manual.

the 930 signals  PORSCHE ???? Just 6 months ago replaced all 8 and already 1 starts to 'clonk' again although intermittendly. To me it sounds that the raising of the truck is the culprit ? hart

Just because the joint is noisy doesn't mean it is worn out.  It could just be dry.  Grab the shaft and work it back and forth to move the grease around in the joint and see if it quietens down.  Maybe the grease has worked out of the joint.  Maybe the grease is flicking out; you could try another brand of grease, it should be suitable for CV joints.  I have had good success with the red Nulon grease but also in the past with normal molybdenum grease.  It's also a good idea after assembling the joint in the vehicle to remove excess air from inside the boot by poking something like a screwdriver carefully in alongside the axle and compressing the boot.  This seems to help keep the grease in the joint.  If the joint is running dry it would cause premature wear and possible failure.
I have never had one wear out yet and the only failure I have had was when the bolts came loose and the joint slid off the shaft and fell apart.  I chased the balls down the street and managed to round up 4 and 2 of the bolts threaded back in and I drove very gently the 5km home.  I replaced all the bolts and added another 2 second hand balls, packed it with grease and am still driving on that joint today.  The joints are 930 Lobro, I upgraded to them thinking I needed them for the angle but now I believe the originals would have been fine.  They coped with the angle no worries I was just worried they might pop out or bind on extreme suspension droop.  I still have them on the shelf and they are still in good condition.  Mine run a fairly steep angle but being in the rear only (bay window) they are not subject to steering angles.  I don't think steep angles should be a problem unless so severe that they are binding or the balls are running off the edge of the joint.  You can see the track that the balls are wearing when the joint is apart.  If the track is worn to the edge of the joint the angle could be too severe.  Just my 2 bobs worth.....

Hello Greg and all

I am about to order CVs front and back and new wheel bearings from Van Cafe.

Just wondering if there are any other bits that should be replaced (ie bushes etc) whilst I am about it and have everything to bits.

Regards

Common - yes
Cause - loose bolts, damaged boot, cheap joint.
Always buy GKN/lobro joints.
Always use 12 point 10.9 bolts.
Getting joints is easy, finding good boots is getting hard.
Which shaft is it? Skot is on the money, remove the shaft and save the tow charge.

Hello,
last night I had to leave my car 100ks from home because of a failed CV joint. I will get it towed home this week.
Is this a common problem? or signs of another bigger issue?
also wondered where I would best go to find replacements?
any help appreciated.
Thanks Greg

Greg, you will need 4 hub seals, two big split pins, bearing grease (get the good stuff not clay based brown goop that has been sitting on your shelf fro 10 years) and brake fluid to do the rear wheel bearings. I would also buy the button seals for the flanges and silicon them in. But that's optional. If your inner cv's grease is shiny and liquidy definitely do it. Greg E

Hello Greg and all

I am about to order CVs front and back and new wheel bearings from Van Cafe.

Just wondering if there are any other bits that should be replaced (ie bushes etc) whilst I am about it and have everything to bits.

Regards

Greg

Thanks Greg

Greg

I am new to Syncros, but have been doing lots of research.
I have recently bought two front driveshafts with CVs from Just Kampers, but it looks to me like the standard CV (diff side) has been installed back to front. The line is on the inside and the chamfered edge on the ball carrier is on the outside. I understood it should be the other way around with the chamfered edge on the ball carrier facing towards the shaft.
Refer photo below.
Any advice much appreciated.

Hi Grant.
Have a look at the detailed GoWesty 930 axle installation instructions.
It gives precise information re CV’s.
These are for REAR, but I guess the principles are the same.
