CV joints

Hi all, just a quick reminder to check your CV joint bolts.

I have started to hear a faint clicking in the rear on the Syncro in left hand turns. Checked everything over this afternoon, engine & GB mounts, axle nut, bearings etc, all looked fine. When I checked the CV joint bolts, even though all were tight, about 1/2 were not at full torque.

I replaced all the bolts last year when the GB was out, torqued them up, and re-checked after a couple of hundred km, so was surprised they were not all at full torque.

Probably something worth checking form time to time. I have checked the bolts since I have had it occasionally, have not seem them loose torque like this before.

Unfortunately for me, looks like the left outer CV is getting worn, I could just feel a little play in there that was not noticeable the last time I checked.

Richard

I check mine before any long distance run now after one of mine broke off due to bolts coming undone.

I drove home 350kms on front wheel drive after removing the offending CV and shaft.

Hi fellow syncro nutters.

I have a syncro from a local bloke I have met a few times at Bunnings in the car park and found he wants to sell his DOKA syncro.

Here is the spiel:
Tom is selling his deluxe DOKA syncro 91 model.
Its nice but has a few blemishes.
Motor was rebuilt 50000kms ago and is very nice.
Gearbox was rebuilt 30000kms ago and needs another rebuild. Expect a $5000 bill for that.
Currently has 320,000kms on the clock.
Brakes need need new discs pads and rear shoes.
Only 1 tiny bit of rust to the drivers side rear door window.
Has a decoupler but no diff locks.
Has AC but not working.
He wants $24000 neg.
I will pass on his phone number via Private email message.
The doka is at Saratoga on NSW Central Coast.
As we all know - these are rare as rocking horse poo and hardly ever come up for sale.
It drives well but the gearbox is noisy.

There is only one person for that rig Scott, it's Phill Lander blue. Greg

Hi Scott,

Be sad to see it leave the district.

re: "Gearbox was rebuilt 30000kms ago and needs another rebuild."

So it was Tom who contacted me back then asking did I know of a recommended gearbox rebuilder and so I told him either Rudi or Ron. Because he was closer, he decided on Ron.

Seems more recent bad experiences reported here confirms we are now down to one recommendation .... Rudi.

Exactly.

He had the same problem as me - extremely noisy bearings plus I had leaks everywhere and housing damage.

So I would avoid Ron at all costs unless you want it to cost you $$$.

Stick with Rudi.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Richard,

If ever you get the chance, ask Rudi about his method of installing CV joint bolts.

I did many years ago, not had a loose or lost bolt since.

Cheers.

Amazing - it only took half a day!

Loads of interest too.

Great result as Tom really needed the money.

Thanks Ken, will do.

Never had an issue before in my multitude of VW's, so was unexpected.

OK, wondering if anyone can confirm, looks like the CV's are all the same, all 4 in the rear and the two front inner. they are also the same as on T2 Kombi's. Looks like just the bolts vary?

Also see some vendors list the 944 CV's. Are they any better than stock?

If the CV's are the same as the T2, I will have new ones packed away some where, just no idea if I can find them!

Richard

Wow, that's quick!!

Went to the VW action day (Brisbane) today, Rosco was there in his single cab syncro. Looked very nice. He also has a set of factory 16" rims he's put on it (with smaller tires though)

Certainly more and more T3's turning up to shows now!

Richard
