decoupler

I know it's probable been discussed before, but can I install a decoupler on my NON rear diff lock syncro.I have an aggressive VC and would feel more comfortable disengaging it when it's not required. If so which of the two versions are better suited, the German or American models.

Regards

Michael

Michael,

The front end of the gearbox is that same so there is no difference in the fitting but you will have to procure all the parts that normally exist on a Syncro with a diff lock – vacuum tapping off the manifold, vacuum reservoir and plumbing, plus the control panel and “switch” (actually a vacuum valve) for the front.

The decoupler with a needle roller is better than the plain bush variety.

Michael,

Your choice.  The end result is much the same.  There is a case for utilizing the better handling and braking characteristics that is experienced with an aggressive VC but eventually it’s your call.

No unless you have a Deluxe or a Caravelle, you will have to buy all of the bits.

Try the USA boys for S/H.

 Thanks for the responses.
I've read some of the old postings on decouplers. I'm non m/m (mechanically minded). What does it entail in returning the 'refund core deposit'. Has anyone in Australia returned/shipped their 'core' for fitting a decoupler?
Regards

Michael

Michael,

A good kit will come with the vacuum servo, lots of small diameter nylon vac tube and a vac valve that mounts on the front control panel.

If you are fitting it to a Syncro that never had a diff lock fitted, you have to source the vac supply, vac reservoir and the control panel that fits on the dash.  The decoupler valve (“switch”) usually goes in the middle position.

Hi Michael,

Shipped a core to Syncro Services in Germany sea mail with Australia Post. Cost about $40, so far as I can remember, and took 5 weeks.

they are currently US$1030 shipped with everything you need.

I am currently getting up to four orders per day, so things are going crazy and my supplies are evaporizing.
If any of you need a decoupler by christmas, you will need to pre-order now and I will build you one as soon as I get the next nosecone back.
I expect things to relax a little in January and February.

Florian
hello, I am looking at purchasing a decoupler from Syncro Services in Germany. Just checking if people have succesfully gone through this supplier and have had any problem in fitting or being re imbursed for the nose cone deposit as indicated in there email below.

Regards Greg.

(taken from their email sent to me recently)
Decoupler comes as a complete unit, so all you have to do is change the nose cone and install the tubes and switches which are part of the decoupler unit. It is quite easy, but we will add a manual instruction off course as well.

The deposit is for the old nose cone that we need to get back to get new decouplers manufactured. If you send the nose cone back to us, please sign the parcel as "example" without any value; otherwhise we´ll get in trouble with customs here in germany.
Hi Greg,

I bought a decoupler from them a couple of years ago now, and they are great to deal with - efficient and reliable. The unit was excellent, with clear instructions and no problems with installing (at least not for my mechanic, anyway :-). Other people have been very happy with Florian's unit too, which I think is essentially the same unit as the Syncro Services one. Hope this helps,

Francesca.

Greg,
The alternative supplier is Florian in the USA. He sells the german decoupler and even includes the nose gasket and detailed install instructions, a number of members here have been very satisfied not only with the product but also Florians shipping arrangements as well so as to avoid GST here on entry, keeping the overall price down. Also the exchange rate of the $OZ with $US makes it very attractive at the moment.

Cheers.

Hi Greg,

we bought sofar 4 units from Florian, every time the transaction has been faultless with core dep returned immediately. Same as with Syncro Services. Comes down to choice

for you. Mainthing is that you instal a unit asap. And the $ won't stay that high forever , Ben Bernake (helicopter Ben) will make sure of that.     Hartmut
