Decoupler

Hi Phill,  that’s no problem.

I have the part that they took  which I understand was the existing output housing and coupling sleeve.  The original flange must have been used or possibly kept by the mechanic.

You can call Dean at Volkspower on 03 9808 6777   - they did the work and will have the info for you.

He also has a couple of syncros himself  and may have a s/h flange on the shelf that he can help you out with measurement.

If I can help you with any of the parts that I have I would be happy to.

Cheers

Stuart

Thank You.

If it is possible and you still have your old flange, could you please measure accurately the PCD of the four tailshaft bolts. Should be around 70mm but I need an accurate measurement and also the diameter of the raised centre.

Thanks

Phill

Hi all, does anyone know of a locally sourced decoupler or is getting one from the US the only option?

I'm not aware of local people with a decoupler. If you do a search through old posts, it could be worth asking some local GB rebuilders. Especially if you want some one local to install it for you

Where are you? If in Sydney, I think the Mullers will source and install one for you.

I recently sourced mine from the US (and have fitted myself)

Richard

Thanks Richard I think I'll end up doing the same, who did you buy yours from and were you happy with it? Purchase cost, freight cost? I'm in Perth.
I'm new to the forum so hello to all.
Andy
Try Paul or Steve Muller.       i had mine installed by Steve for around $900-00, he also lent me a nose cone to send to America he kept my original one, the cost of the decoupler and postage was about $980-00 aus this was when it was dollar for dollar on the exchange rate, one of the boys told me that he could supply and install a unit for app $2000-00 so if you add the postage cost to ship the nose cone it works out about the same, the one advantage of purchasing it here is that if any thing is wrong with it you can get it serviced here

Hi Andy,

I am in the same boat at the moment.  I have a quote from weddle in the US for $1195 US +$ 145 shipping,  AA Transaxle are $895US +$500 core charge (refundable on return of nosecone) +$200-275 shipping.  I am thinking I will go with the Weddle as then I get to keep my nosecone and can remove the decoupler and use in another vehicle if I was to sell the vehicle.

Neil.

I used AATransaxle on recommendation from others, plus it is based on the factory design (needle roller in the shaft and different design dog gear)

People like Go Westy and Van Café (plus others) use slightly different US design. There's plenty of posts on various forums (Samba etc) on the different designs and their merits. Can't say I have heard bad things about either, so think both will work well.

Places like Van Café the total cost would be cheaper.

Landed cost was ~$1800 (got it a few weeks ago) $US895 for kit, $US225 freight, $AU100 to ship nose cone, can't find the invoice for duty/clearance paper work etc but was ~$200

I have only mounted it to the GB so far, I have not put it back in the bus yet (have the fuel tank out currently). I have confirmed it switches and the indicator switch is functioning :)

If you do it yourself and import, it's worth asking if you can ship it as two orders to avoid the duty!

From the other posts, looks like the mullers could be an economical solution, plus local support.

I rang Mullers who said they don't do it anymore but there's a bloke in Canberra named Nick....? Can anyone from that part of the world add anything to that?
Andy
Thanks again Richard. Is the duty only over a certain weight or cost? I'm a bit of a novice in the import game.
Andy
sorry, Weddle price should be US$1095 +$145 shipping,

Anything over $AU1000.

Where I got caught out was it is $ Australian and includes parts plus freight! (total invoice value). I incorrectly assumed $US895 for the kit would be OK.

That said an order on Van café not too long ago was over the $1000 and that slipped through (probably just lucky)

Unsure on other local places that would do it, but am sure plenty can do it if you source the parts yourself and hand over to install. That is the time consuming part that would be hard to manage for a workshop trying to run efficiently.

Also keep in mind the kits assume you have an existing vacuum system in place (eg have factory diff lock). If not, you will need to allow for this also. And a point many often make, ensure you can remove the fill/level plug in the GB before starting. If you can't get that out and take the nose off and loose a bit of oil, you can't just put the nose back on and kep the bus drivable!

Mine came out fine (plus I drained the oil for an oil change at the same time), a bit of penetrating oil a while before starting is a good idea.

And AATrans is $US200 for the core :) (or $0 if you pre-send a core over as I did)

Van-café is $US895 also, but in general have much cheaper freight.

Richard

Thanks that helps

Hey Andy,

I am in Canberra,  don't know Nick yet though.  I'd like to get his contact details also

Peter

I got mine through AA Transaxle, from what I remember I didn't pay any duty. Dollar was better than now but not brilliant. When I sent my core it was just the housing and the drive flange that they needed, the shaft and splined coupling were not needed.

Brent
Hi Brent/ Richard,

I did the same thing - AA Transaxle as they seemed the best alternative with roller bearings (as recommended by Ben T from the USA) once Florian was out of the picture.

Again I didn't pay duty on my de-coupler but when I got my small car kit in I certainly did.

The order gets held up in customs until you complete the forms (find an appropriate code for your item) and pay the duty - then they release the item to Australia Post or your other courier. Best to do the duty declaration via email on line as it saves you about $50.

My de-coupler worked very well and I kept my nose cone too - just in case.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi all, does anybody know of a supplier and/or installer of decouplers in or around Melbourne?

Cheers
Andy
Hi Andy,

Is it very urgent? I may can get another on in. Installation is not a big deal at all, takes about 4-6 easy hours.

Cheers Arne

Hi Arne,

If you have access to them, would be keen on details. Met a guy recently who picked up a nice looking (Telstra) van. He's been going through it to get it on the road, and a decoupler is something he's interested in.

He's not on a computer, so am helping him find a few parts he needs.

Richard

Hi Arne, not necessarily urgent. Where do you get them from and how much are they? Obviously depending on the exchange at the time.

Cheers
Andy
