Has anyone fitted their decoupler yet?

How about a story?

I had one fitted last year but I haven't done many kilometres yet. Still
got other problems to sort out. I don't have power steering and being in
2wd drive certainly makes the van easier to handle around town. Parking
and the like. Can do tight U-turns without worrying whether the gearbox is
being stressed.

It definitely works, I've been using the van as a tractor and pulling some
stumps out of the back yard and I sure know when I've forgotten to put it
into 4wd. Also notice the difference driving down gravel roads, much more
stable in 4wd. All in all I'm very happy I got one, alhough mine is the
USA version. Should be buying it now with the rate the dollar is, not
55cents like when I got mine!!! Oh well can't win them all.

Regards to all

Has anyone from the decoupler group buy fitted theirs yet?
Did the flange that bolts to the tailshaft come with it?
Has anyone fitted one to a standard non diff lock syncro and where did
you pick the vacuum line from?
I also need some info on the vacuum reservoir and valve from a deluxe
or Carravelle.

Phil  I have fitted a Diff Lock and Decoupler to a Non-Standard ex Telstra Van…Its very simple.( The Vacuum side of it)     If you get the chance to swing under a Dlx or Caravelle and you will see that the Vacuum line that feeds the Brake Booster has a “T’ that leads to the Vac Reservoir…these “T’s” are  cheap through VW…and you will also need a few other “T” pieces if you have access to ETKA the Nos are on it.

The Decoupler I bought was from Germany (Bernd Jaeger) one , and it did have the flange attached to the Nose piece with it.

I don't think that Bernd Jaeger's quality control is too good. I don't
think that I would recomend him. You think that something like that
would get noticed at the workshop?

Phil…Not too sure what your referring to here??  Please explain..

No flange or nut on mine.

Is the vacuum servo the same as the normal diff lock ones as I have to
replace mine?

Oh…Sorry I didn’t realise yours was a Bernd Jaeger one….I thought it was from the States??

Yes the Vacuum Servo is identical as the Diff Lock one. Why do you have to replace yours??  Was it damaged in transit?  Have you located the Electrical wiring for the Decoupler??

It took me awhile…but I eventually found it.

I've seen it before up above the gearbox.

Phil,  What oil do you use in your Gearbox/Trasaxle…I'm about to do a change…and have been told Redline ML90.??  Any thoughts??

I still have some old genuine VW (GL4?). They have changed their oils and I don't know what is compatible. Apparently if you use the wrong oil in the box (GL5?) it causes corrosion of the synchro rings or something. If you use the wrong one in the front diff (GL4?) it increases wear. If someone knows more please let me know or I may have to contact VW Germany.

The flange that bolts to the tailshaft did not come with mine. I need
someone that has a propshaft or the flange out of the car to get
measurements so that I can make a tool for holding the flange so that I
can swap my old old one to the decoupler if it is the same. I am hoping
that the flange is not supposed to be modified or machined for some
reason. Can anyone on here help me?
(see the decoupler at photo number 31)
Hi

I do not have the Bernd Jaeger decoupler (mine is from SA built to orig
Steyer_Puch specs)
but I do know that all the decoupler units use the original drive
flange. Remove your existing
flange and you will find it will fit perfectly on the decoupler.

Has anyone fitted their group buy decoupler yet?

I have.

Had it fitted last Monday onto my 89 Syncro Trakka.

Haven’t driven it much since then but in the time I have I know that it makes a terrific difference to the van.  It rolls nicely, it turns fantastically, the fuel economy (in the limited time I have driven it) appears to be better.  Comparisons are easy because the complete opposite happens when I switch the decoupler off .   I guess the thing ended up costing me around $2500 completely fitted etc. but I knew it was worth it  after 10 minutes of city driving.

My VC was still working according to the standard testing methods but once you turned full lock it was very tight.

The fitting had a few difficulties –  the mechanics couldn’t find the connection in the loom where the instructions stated it was – this might well be a Trakka thing – the van was fitted with all the Trakka  extras and this might have created the problem.

If you have any specific questions just let me know.

Stuart

Thank You.

If it is possible and you still have your old flange, could you please measure accurately the PCD of the four tailshaft bolts. Should be around 70mm but I need an accurate measurement and also the diameter of the raised centre.

Thanks

Phill
