Or investigate whether your 091 case is suitable for modification to accept a locker.

My preference if just one locker was to be installed. is a auto or manual locker front. Leaving the rear open.   The idea is when 4x4ing a locked front will pull itself over a obstacle easier than a rear locked pushing the front over.

With auto locked front a decoupler should be installed.

Hi Peter,

I have a locking diff front diff case.  It is in good condition, recently dismantled, $300.
I am in Sydney but can post if required, let me know if you are interested,

Neil.

In my experience auto locking diffs in the front do weird things to steering even when in rear wheel drive only.
I think a manual locking diff is best in the front so you can turn it off when you don't want it.  The original VW diff lock is hard to beat.
Further, a diff lock is of more benefit in the rear than in the front.
This is because once you get the front up on an obstacle there is less weight over the front diff and so less traction. There is seldom enough traction to drag the back up.
However, a locker in the rear has a better chance of pushing the front up because it has more weight and therefore the most traction, especially once the front is up.
The front locker will only help to initiate the front wheels climbing the obstacle, after that it can't help much and you can compensate the initial climb with driving technique.
Just my 10 cents worth, :)

Neil.

When i’m hanging a rear wheel in the air, I have found an engaged front locker very handy.
SYNCROs are famous for it.
