With some suspicion!
I thought that it was a multi-branch sausage.
I don't recall having seen this on new Syncros when they were in the VW showrooms in Australia.

Phil,
Never had or seen one before. If it wasn't for the parts label would have assumed it was from a mickey mouse showbag or is a raincover for a Spanish policeman's hat.
Apart from waterproofing, would probably also do a useful job of  keeping bulldust out of the distributor. Are they currently available?
I seem to remember the original minis were notorious for wet distributor coughing problems in the rain and people used to use a modified rubber glove until Leyland/Morris/Austin/Worsley/Riley fitted an appropriate cover.

They have kept a lot of dust from mine.

Are they currently available?

I don't know. Try calling a dealer and give them the number.
I just bought a spare from ebay.

I remember those days.

Gday Peter and ALL, I haven't seen or heard of this either. Do they
really mean waterproof or splash resistant?

When syncro wading in water, is there a critical component at a lower
level than the distributor that when emersed, will cause the engine to
stop? If not, then a waterproof distributor makes sense.

Peter, the attached pics can't be viewed directly on the syncro forum
page. You need to have elected to have forum posts sent to your own
email address, attachments can then be viewed/downloaded/saved from
there.

Cheers.

I'd say that you'd be correct there Ken.
They don't completely seal and the plugs would be lower.

All of the later ones had them but I am not sure about the pre '89 syncros.
A lot of the dipstick mechanics threw them away.

My Syncro is a factory turbodiesel. No distributor so no dust and moisture worry. I would guess the newer neoprene aftermarket covers from the likes of EMPI are more effective:

re: "They don't completely seal and the plugs would be lower".

There is that famous video of 2 syncros crossing the river in Zambia
with the water well above distributor level, you can see the exhaust
gasses bubbling up to the surface of the water as they motored across.
There was no evidence of a fully sealed air intake snorkel either and
the video gives the impression both syncros waded through from one side
to the other under their own power.

Begs a few questions:

Was the video a scam?

If not, were the syncros stock standard and the stock air intake system
and spark plugs didn't fail?

If not stock standard, what specialised accessories then would need to
be fitted to achieve such a crossing?

I thought those two Syncro's were oil burners............
Don't know about that .... I do know I've never seen it discussed one
way or the other.

I reckon Mike Plompen of busman.be would probably know.
