Unfortunately, the German's love the big-rig look of these mirrors so demand is quite high. There are plentyof thej which pop-up on German Ebay but rarely do they offer shipping outside of Europe or accept anythingbesides expensive bank transfers. The ones who do can often get prices dramatically higher. The vendor inin these auctions that Phill found is extremely reliable. I have been buying parts from him for years. He doesnot have the best prices but he often has what nobody else can get.BTW, I asked Lars if he still carried the original Syncro 16 CV joint protector. He also has one and that is used.He does carry the replicas like many other vendors. He is also one of the group of vendors who commissionedthe return to production of the diff lock actuator. The item is NLA from VW but the manufacturer was contractedre restart production. That is why you are seeing so many of those things come back in the market. Same canbe said for things like door scrapers and other wear items. Lars is my one of my sources for some of these pieces.Cheers,BenT

VW now has a restoration parts service thatChristophe recently posted about here. It is possible this is one of those "heritage parts". Some parts have startedto trickle in from that source. I will bet the markings on the parts themselve will not necessarily be identical to theoriginal parts on your Syncro. This is similar to a program instituted by BMW in the early 80's to help enthusiasts maintain older examples of themarque. If VW has the parts again in their inventory that's great. It will help those who only know the VW dealer as a sourcefor maintenance parts. I have found many items for sale from dealers outside VW's ordinary network with much morecompetitive pricing. For example, I got brand new RHD powersteering racks (originals) for $300. How much can youget those from VW?BenT
I laugh at some of the prices that things are selling for in the US when thaey are still available from VW. I met a couple of syncro guys from San Francisco at Vanfest 2006 who told me about the diff lock actuator that everyone thought was not available. Apparently no-one had tried a dealer.
There is only one way to find out if they are available. Ask!
We have the problem here that we order from VW Australia, which stocks nothing! Then they order from Singapore who don't have much T25 stuff and then have to order from Germany.
I used to be able to get parts from Germany in 10 days!

Apparently no-one had tried a dealer. In fact, I asked the dealer first. They did a search on worldwide inventory. None were available at the time. Ask some of yourSyncro parts specialist. I'll bet you spoke with either Shaun or Stacy, right? There is only one way to find out if they are available. Ask!The parts manager for several VW dealerships is a member of the international Syncro List. I know him personally and is thefirst person I ask. I also asked Ron Price VW which has been a 40-year VW dealership here and also Team VW (another dealer).Same answer at that time.We have the problem here that we order from VW Australia, which stocks nothing! It's the same thing in the US. There's a few parts stocked in a distribution center. The rest come from Germany or South Africa. The VW dealer inventory is supposed to be acccessible to all dealers also. If a VW dealer has a part stocked on their shelves, there is a good chance you local dealer can view that inventory. The exception are parts for special model like the Syncro 16. If the model was not sold in your country, VW will not allow your dealer to see that inventory. At least that is how it is supposed to work. You did not answer my RHD rack question. I assume they are slightly more expensive from the VW dealer in OZ. Have you tried ordering the shiftrod for the Syncro recently? Our dealers are saying that is obsolete. Perhaps this would make a good test case of this theory. The nylon cover at the end of the shiftrods wear out. They are not replaceable per VW. The plastic is cast over the rod. I am trying to encourage a local independent parts source to "rebuild" the shifrods by recasting the fragile plasic pieces over used rods. One enterprising fellow took to using remnants from a nylong counter top which he cut to shape and glued on. Seems to have worked fine. Anyway, please ask your VW dealer if they can get the shiftrod. My dealer is saying they are NLA.

The genuine parts prices are amazing here. Some are cheap and some are very very expensive. I usually price a few parts before I go overseas. A couple of years ago I priced the front and rear wiper rubbers genuine. The fronts were 2x the UK price and 3x the German price. The rears were cheaper in Australia than the UK or Germany.

In fact when I bought the "last Syncro thing-a-mabob in North America", I was told a few more existed in Germany. Phill, remember the OME pricing? I don't know about now but some months ago OME's were selling for less here than in OZ. Bottomline is we all need to shop around before commiting to buy. Forums are certainly a good place to sort out where the deals are.I personally think dealers who price reasonably not only belongs to the groups but should be encouraged by our support of theirgoods. Bad dealers will show their true colours in short order. I have made the mistake before of assuming that a dealer was oneof the good guys simply because they belonged to the Syncro community. It was an expensive lesson. Prior to my experience, there were no negative comments about the guy. Once he was exposed on the forums, the complained started pouring in. The netresult is he no longer tries to sell there. There was no need to expel him once people knew hwo he did business. As I mentioned to Gary in pmail, OZ gets some things which we cannot get for a reasonable amount of money. For example are ARB Roobars. I would love to have one to keep the tourist off my Syncro. You guys also got those seatbelt holder(?) for the backseat. I'm talking about that metal bar shaped like a boomerang.Cheers,BenT

Gday Mike,
Yes it was I who raised interest in this item, I must say the mind boggles at the extraordinary prices a pair of mirrors can command. On top of that though are the shipping costs and probably custom duties as well when they reach Australia's shores.
You may like to comment why it is that the same item varies so much from 3 European suppliers ......
On EBay at http://tinyurl.com/66dlq7 , this German supplier lists a pair for 359 euro. ($AU688)
Bernd Jaeger has quoted me a pair for 320 euro. ($AU613)
Happily, you say you can supply a pair at 220 euro. ($AU422)
Are there differences in quality and design perhaps that reflect the different prices?
Can you also please tell me the shipping charges to Australia for one pair.
Thanks Mike.
Cheers.

Heh you're earning your keep here m8y .... good stuff, subject of
course to a new quote.
Can you elaborate for me please on the customs processing of the parcel
you received. I thought Australian Customs charge duty on all parcels
with a supplier declaration value above say $AU100-120. Not in your
case? Maybe it's a random check? Did they send it in gift wrapping?
Other?
Anyone who hasn't seen these mirrors in the flesh or haven't used them,
it is hard to understand how much better they are compared to the stock
mirrors. They are worth considering as replacement mirrors for original
mirrors on their last legs, for example ... sloppy pivot points,
fracturing plastic due to UV, broken glass, etc. I love the way they can
very quickly flip back out of the way in confined spaces. The rear view
they offer is fantastic. The existing screw locations are re-used, all
that it needs are 2 screw holes for the top bracket and 2 stainless
steel fixing screws (supplied).
A good case for a bulk purchase enquiry, especially if the all up price
is somewhere around what Bruce paid. Anyone?
Any known additional sources of supply please? Anyone? TIA.
Cheers.
