Yeah well there is no mention of difflocks in the advert so maybe not.

Then again, I bought my syncro, no mention anywhere in the advert of it
having a difflock. It did. The expensive bits in the diff I mean. Just
ask Rudi or Rick ... haha

So it's def. worth a look anyway... go for a crawl around underneath and
take a bopeep.

Cheers.

Hello Syncro Members.
Thanks to all those that responded to my email in regard as to what
to check out when inspecting a syncro/kombi. There is a useful
inspection check list as well as T3 tech help at the Kombi Club . This
is their link. http://forums.kombiclub.com/ Very useful. The van I
went to look at in Canberra was a 1986 T3 Syncro that Annette has
posted on this site in Car Sales.

I decided not to buy as some work was needed on it and I don't have a
garage or private property to park it on. I'm a street kid from St
Kilda. It was privately imported from the U.K and is a 1.6 turbo
diesel with the conversion being done in the U.K. It has both front
and rear diff locks and the engine was rebuilt some 34,000 MILES ago.
The speedo is in miles and total miles on the speedo is 127,000 Miles
(approx 205,000klms).
A new turbo was imported and fitted only 2,000 miles ago.It has a
most unusual pop top nothing like anything I've seen in Australia but
unfortunately was\ starting to fall apart whilst I was there . It had
to be tied down internally. It is not canvas like in Oz but has a
concertina effect of collapsing panels with two upper windows and a
vent in the ceiling.
The car handles very well and the engine sounds good although very
short on power. It really needs to have a good run up to get over
hills. A very slight incline along the Barton Hwy from standing start
meant I couldn't get the car over45mph (about 76kph I think) on the
open Hwy. General body condition for a 20 year old car was pretty
good. The transfer stripes and "4x4" "Syncro" transfers were faded and
peeling and looked tacky. The internal fitting were OK and the front
passenger seat swivelled around. The bed seat needs to be re-upholstered.
It has been used basically as a runaround/shopping basket and
unfortunately the owner has two different sets of tyres (same size)
with different tread patterns. I don,t think the VC is working as I
got bogged in a culvert and even with both locks applied were not
making any progress. Only by deflating the two rear tyres and revving
as hard as I could was I able to inch the car out. However that said I
don't think the transmission has been damaged or "cooked" as repeated
full lock turns on the asphalt showed no signs of binding. If your got
time, a mechanical intuition ( and I'm not), a little dosh and
patience I think this would really suit a syncro enthusiast for a
unique niche club car. The owners Wynne and Cyril are delightful
people and easy to talk to.
Regards
Michael
Gday Michael

Sounds to me like the VC has gone passive, not aggressive, much the same
as mine. Basically means there'll be no help at all from the front
wheels but assuming the VC is now passive, at least there's no damage
being done to the drive train, diff, gearbox etc. And a mixed bag of
tyres then, in this instance, is of little concern.

If it's a turbo diesel and your description of how badly it performs,
makes you wonder whether the turbo is working at all.

From what I know now, a 2 person fully laden syncro campervan including
full water and petrol tanks can often exceed the maximum gross weight
for this vehicle of 2.5 tons. Means everything is pretty much stressed
and working hard most the time and the standard brakes are barely
adequate when off road on steepish downhill slopes. The real trick then
is to try keeping the weight down as much as possible, often a big ask.

My wish list in the long term? Probably a more powerful motor and
beefier brakes. Cheers.

Ken

I owned a 4x2 1.6 turbo diesel camper in the UK.
The T3 van is way too big an ask for this little engine. I put an AAZ
1.9 TD in to this van and whilst the torque was fantastic, it was
still revving too high at 65mph and really needed some gearing changes
to cruise at a decent speed.
Fantastic fuel economy if you sat at 60mph max though - makes my Subi
powered Syncro look like an American gas guzzler in comparison.

Also worth noting that the bellhousing on the TD buses are the same as
those used on many of VW and Audis other vehicles ie. are an excellent
start for a VW family engine conversion.

Mmmm .....someone fancy building the first Australian 2.5 TDi powered
T3 Syncro?

Cheers,

Andy
Ceduna (just in case you'd forgotten Les LOL)

That was my first thought but not enough fun tickets, you
would have to change the gearing for the 2.5 as well ????

Mmmm 2.5 Tdi... (eyes gaze off into distance) Bigger brakes, new
gearing to get most advantage, paint job, diff locks... Anyone got
some footage of a 2.5 Tdi Syncro? If only fun tickets grew on trees.
