Francesca, very sad indeed. But I'm somewhat pleased that I was fortunate enough to witness the production line with trade school when T2 (Bay) was introduced. When production started in 1950 the T1 was officially called Typ 2 with Beetle being Typ 1. This was changed in 1967 when Typ 2 became T1 and the new Bay became T2.
The T3 was introduced in 1979.

I'm not sad, as far as I am concerned VW are still making the kombi and now up to the T5.5 - everything changes and it was real nice to still have some old being made new - makes for lots of new parts for the bays - although many don't fit / work with the old style bays.

Anyway the T2 is usually referred to as the Type 2 being the kombi, Type 1 the beetle, Type 3 the Type 3/ Karmann Razor etc, Type 4 (that squarish looking station wagon thing) etc.

The kombi delineation refers to Transporter 1 (the Splitty), Transporter 2 (the bay), Transporter 3 (the Wedge), Transporter 4 (The Hiace) etc.

All this gained from many years of yapping kombis to anyone that will listen and listening to the same.
