That would be very handy to steer you in the right direction.
Almost like an OBD2 reader set up which I have for my syncro subie motor.

Yes, definitely will be good to have that together. I do hope a new Cat converter helps.
The empty cat does give better performance as reported by a mate of mine from Canberra who has removed the insides of his.
He doesn’t have any overheating issues…
Hi Scott and all,
Got back from Old Bar. Fuel economy is down to 7.4km/L, so need to look into this further. Something is amiss.
Other than that, had a great run. Nice to be able to drive at normal highway speeds again, and not sit on 80kph everywhere.
Compared to the old motor, it’s also not burning oil. The old motor would use oil if sitting constantly at high speeds (100kph and over), but didn’t use oil if speeds were kept down. I assume the oil rings are worn. So far though this engine is not using oil, even at highway speeds.
Great to hear you successfully navigated the crazy roads home after a NSW long weekend.
That fuel consumption is a significant issue. Maybe a temp 2 or a vacuum leak issue - those vacuum hoses easily fall off and are a bit hidden so not easy to notice.
Great to hear no oil use - even VW said that 1L to 1000kms was acceptable.
Hope you had a good trip back also!
Haha, 1L is VW trying to stop customers complaining. Everything being good, you should not need to top up between services. I’ve done over 3000km since the engine went in!
Even the old motor didn’t use that much oil. Burning that much oil would cause a lot of issues with carbon build up and Cat converter clogging.
Thanks on the tips, yes will need to do a lot more investigating. I did check the temp 2 sender output and it seemed to be in spec. Might be worth putting a new one in just to compare. A vac leak would make it run lean (would account for the higher temps), but should also make it run more economical?
If the vacuum leak is to the fuel regulator it could cause rich running?
Very true! I did check fuel pressure when I first put it in and was in spec.
Looks like I need to check everything over in detail again.
Thanks Scott
