Hi all just wondering if anyone has fitted this engine guard to their syncro and where they located the sensor? heading off on trip to the Pilbara shortly and thought it might be a good idea. cheers Greg
I have a Subie motor so I cant really comment, yet I think (having a stock 2wd van), that the sensor would be good on the left hand side head where the earth strap connects or the bolt hole next to it.
Interesting device, an audible alarm is more likely to alert you than a gauge somewhere you can overlook.
The video is misleading though, if your dash gauge is that low there’s something already wrong (unless you just started the engine), so not a fair comparison.
If you look at a Syncro, provided the dash gauge functions correctly (they’re quite simple and reliable), it will pick up rising temps fairly quickly. If you lose coolant (so hot coolant does not get to the gauge sender in the thermostat) as shown in the video, the coolant level sender will pick that up quickly also and before engine temps rise.
(see this alarm Gowesty audible coolant temp alarm kit – GoWesty )
The original gauges (including the oil pressure switches) are a sound system provided it’s all functioning well.
To answer your question, the manufacturer should have recommendations? I thought an exhausts stud (next to the water pump) would heat up quickly if things were going wrong.
that’s one clean engine bay Scott!!!
There has been so many ads for this device on Facebook. I have been thinking about it as well and comments that have been made in relation to our vans are very valuable.
And I also was impressed with such a clean engine from Scott. Does he ever get off the bitumen or does he clean it after every trip.
That’s Scott’s 2WD (Auto), so does not need to go off road
The syncro’s engine is pretty clean too…it does get dirty but I always clean it after I clean the rest of the van. Cant help myself.
thanks for your feedback everyone
I do the same Scott, it’s worth the effort to keep it clean, especially when it’s time to work on something.
I have a Moreton Island trip in August, so will start preparing soon, some fresh rust protection so it’s nice and dry before I go, and lots of hosing off when back.
