Engine & transmission reconditioning enquiry

Hello all, I am considering purchasing a 92 T3 syncro transporter (ex Telecom)after having ownd a T3 GL caravelle. It has a great service history but has driven 300 000km. The top end of the engine was reconditioned at 270 000km ( a burst hose accident with little real damage but the owmer decided to overhaul the heads in case) and had been meticously maintained before this time. My question to the group is I am debating whether it would be prudent to rec the rest of the engine and the transmission. I am led to believe that it is best to do both simultaneously & that the reconditioning of a relatively good transmission will cost $12-1500. I am unsure what the engine reco would cost but have great experienced & reasonable mechanics here in Thomastown. What are your thoughts? and what sort of cost could I expect? I reason that the expense would yield us a vehicle that could give us another 300000km in syncro style!

Hi Toby,

I can't really answer your questions, not having the necessary mechanical knowledge, but I hope someone else on this forum will. I suppose that the rationale for doing both at the same time might be if you were interested in changing gear ratios during your transmission rebuild - many people wish for a taller 4th gear - and that this needs to be proportionate to the power of your engine (I hope this is making sense). I can say that Syncro transmissioin rebuilds can be very costly, though. We had ours done, with the crown wheel and pinion replaced, and it cost more than four times the figure you mention. If you need to replace the crown wheel and pinion, those parts alone are $2K. Is it John Goodison at Volkshome you see out at Thomastown? I have heard good things about him. I don't think he's a specialist in Syncro transmission rebuilds, and they are very tricky to get right, and given the expense involved you need to take it to an expert. When I asked John about our transmission rebuild, it transpired that he was going to sub-contract the work out to Lloyd Davies at Volkwerke in Greensborough, who is appropriately experienced with Syncros. Anyway, I hope you get some more solid information than this from others, and good luck with your decision whether to buy. Ours is a fantastic family getaway vehicle and all the people on this forum will sing the praises of the Syncro, but roundly acknowledge that you have to really do your research to be sure of what you're buying, as some very expensive skeletons can be lurking under the bonnet (or rear end, in this case).

Regards,

Francesca.

Sorry to hear about your tribulations, Michael. We learnt the hard way too (as have quiet a few others). Best of luck with sorting it all out.

Re our latest misadventure: Volkwerke suspects our cooling tower might have gone or a dodgy hoseclip may have bitten the dust. He recommends recplacing all hose clips over a certain age.

Francesca, when you say cooling tower,I suspect you mean the water distribution unit on thr drivers side clipped up behind the wheel arch
The VAG manual shows it as a upright stalk with one inlet(from motor)and 5 oulets.I have replaced mine and know it as the Christmas Tree(I have a good imagination). It doesnt look like it does in the manual as it is more like a barrel, with the oulets, that clips up behind the drivers rear wheel arch with a spring clip. Not a hard job as I replaced mine on the ground at home.Shouldnt be that expensive to repair.May have to do some shopping around to get one though.
I have replaced it on both my Syncro, and my T3 when I owned it(although they are very different-distrubution unit),but were both plastic that would get brittle and break easy with age.
If you have a big cooling system failure on t3z it is the first place I would look.Good luck, I hope that it is a simple as the christmas tree to fix.

Hi there,

Thanks for that information. It's just speculation at this stage because our Syncro hasn't reached Volkwerke yet (flat-bedding it down today from Euroa). The part you mention is, I think, sometimes referred to as a 'coolant tower' - although I like the Christmas tree analogy. Fingers crossed it's either that or something more minor. I think we'll get all the brittle plastic elements in our cooling system checked out and replaced as preventive maintenance, while we're at it.

Hi all
For what it's worth, could your cooling problem be a water pump issue, as a non syncro mechanic friend of mine has made comment on in re to my cooling issues

See what's on at the movies in your area. Find out now.
Yes, it could well be that, or a number of other things. I'll stop speculating, and leave it up to my mechanic to work it out. I'll let you know the result, in case anything useful could come out of it for others.

Hi all
For what it's worth, could your cooling problem be a water pump issue, as a non syncro mechanic friend of mine has made comment on in re to my cooling issues

Francesca, when you say cooling tower,I suspect you mean the water distribution unit on thr drivers side clipped up behind the wheel arch
The VAG manual shows it as a upright stalk with one inlet(from motor)and 5 oulets.I have replaced mine and know it as the Christmas Tree(I have a good imagination) .It doesnt look like it does in the manual as it is more like a barrel, with the oulets, that clips up behind the drivers rear wheel arch with a spring clip. Not a hard job as I replaced mine on the ground at home.Shouldnt be that expensive to repair.May have to do some shopping around to get one though.
I have replaced it on both my Syncro, and my T3 when I owned it(although they are very different-distrubut ion unit),but were both plastic that would get brittle and break easy with age.

If you have a big cooling system failure on t3z it is the first place I would look.Good luck, I hope that it is a simple as the christmas tree to fix.
