EOI: Custom Stainless Water Tanks

Hi All,

I am finally getting around to having my corroded Trakka aluminium water tanks remade in stainless steel. I have a local chap on the case and he reckons there might be some discount available for a bulk order.

The Trakka tanks have an internal coolant line which acts as a heat exchanger so hot water is available when arriving at a campsite. This will be replicated in the new tanks (one hot, one cold) along with a slight modification to the shape (so less visible under the van) and the inclusion of 2 baffles plus an inspection / cleaning port on top.

I know a lot of people got the South African tanks the other year but if anyone else there is interested please get in touch. The tanks will be made in Woodend, Victoria by an experienced stainless fabricator.

Cheers.

Hi,

Thanks for the interest.

The price I have been quoted is $750 each tank. That is for one hot, one cold.

Just checked about petrol and this is fine but I would need some design input as there is nothing to copy as per original water tanks I have.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

I recently enquired at a company in Germany for a 80L fuel tank, stainless steel with all appliances necessary for installation (fuel filer, hoses, pump etc.). The tank uses existing mounting points, so except of the fuel filler no additional drilling is necessary. Also available as fresh water tank in V4A (water grate stainless steel).

Some info in Germany are available from their website:

Price landed for the fuel tank including. Shipping and tax/duty is approx. AUD $1550 (via Air freight).
In a group buy of 10 tanks, price comes down to approx. AUD $1200 (shipping via sea freight, approx. 45 days). We may can get an additional discount.

Calculation ist based on current exchange rate of 0.64€.
The next batch will be produced in Feb. 2018. Orders are taken from now - payment upfront is unfortunately necessary. But know those guys and do trust them.

Any interests?

@Jon, do you think they are capable to make a tank which fits in the spare wheel carrier tray?

Arne,

That looks like a great idea.

That space is useless to me as my huge wheels dont fit in there.

I have seen a spare wheel space fuel tank you can apparently buy from a Landrover - maybe a new one of them without any previous use could be adapted to a water tank?

80ltrs is a lot to hang in front of the fwd axle I would think.  Really would like to do something with that space though. Probably tool box.

Hey Jon,
How is the coolant line routed to the tank?

Hi Nils, i owned Jon's Syncro for some time. I experienced a rather cold cabin in winter as the hot coolant was routed through the warm water tank before it reached the front heat exchange. So all you got was cold air especially as the uninsulated metal tank works like an efficient heat sink. A shut off valve would be good, it could be opened say 30 mins before destination. Enough to heat the water for a shower.

Btw, any news on the wipers ?

Hi Nils,

As Hart alludes, it is a strange design that intercepts the font heater coolant circuit. So in winter the heater is ineffective and in summer you have to have the heater on to heat the tank of water (Trakka recommend “shutting the vents”). It has been handy for cooling the engine in heavy traffic on a hot day though.

I have seen other Trakka owners fit a shut-off valve and that is what I plan to do. An insulated water tank would be best but that is probably taking things too far.

Cheers.

80ltrs is a lot to hang in front of the fwd axle I would think.  Really would like to do something with that space though. Probably tool box.

Hey Jon,
How is the coolant line routed to the tank?

That space is useless to me as my huge wheels dont fit in there.

I have seen a spare wheel space fuel tank you can apparently buy from a Landrover - maybe a new one of them without any previous use could be adapted to a water tank?

Hi,

Thanks for the interest.

The price I have been quoted is $750 each tank. That is for one hot, one cold.

Just checked about petrol and this is fine but I would need some design input as there is nothing to copy as per original water tanks I have.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Great Idea Hart.

Run a by-pass around the tank with a control valve to use the heat exchanger in the tank when or if required.

Nils had a pile of them at Boris's Picnic Day on the weekend.

Here area couple of photos:

Thanks guys,

Thats exactly what I was try to work out whether it got heat from the radiator or the heater lines.
The heater line is obviously easier, but for reasons described isn't as a good an idea as all that.
I will keep nutting over how I can add a tank to the radiator circuit.

The wiper blades showed up last Thursday and I sold over half at picnic day on Sunday.
I am still working on the postage as it is of course a long parcel and won't just fit in a prepaid bag. Ordering just one pair makes postage pretty dear verses part cost, but I'm working on it

Nils

Just to complicate this further! Or rather to open up the options! I make the South African tanks which were supplied to some of you a few years back. These are also still available for water or fuel in 58 litre capacity at a cost of A$715, which includes all fittings, filler, pump etc. Airfreight is roughly A$100 per tank on an order of 10 tanks or roughly A$200 per tank on single orders, and takes 4 to 5 days.

I am also finalising the design for a water tank to be mounted where the spare wheel goes. This will have water heating as an option and will have a valve so as not to affect the performance of the interior heater.

Let me know if there is interest or any questions.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Cost for the spare wheel tanks would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott

Cost would be the same as the normal 58 litre tanks. IE A$520 for the tank and A$195 for the fitting kit. A$715 in total.

Scott I also have sent you an email.

Ian

Capacity will be between 40 and 45 litres for the front tank. About as much weight as you would want to add up there.
Exactly Ian.

The tank plus 45 kgs of water would be rather front heavy.

I'll have a think about it and see what interest there is.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Jon

I could be interested in the new stainless as the 16'' Trakka cold water is corroding and leaking. Hot water tank Ive removed.
I was thinking a new year project was in order.

cheers Mark

John,
I will be interested if it can be a fuel tank option.
