Exhaust

Will have to change the exhaust in the near future on my 90 syncro. Is
there an exhaust that will improve performance or does everyone just
refit the standard? The van goes well at the moment but a few more
herbs wont go astray. Thanks Chris.
Chris,

The gains made through an exhaust system are very marginal and rarely
worth the money. To sigb=nificantly increase the power of an engine
such as hours, you have to go to turbocharging and that brings its own
problems - along with a hefty bill. The only other alternative is a
Subaru engine, and that's not cheap either.

Chris…If your looking for a “few more Herbs”…(As a lot of Syncro Owners are!)  I have just recently installed High Compression Pistons, Vanagon Chip, Modified Snorkel/Air intake, K&N Air Filter..and am pleasantly surprised with the results.  This was not such a costly exercise…infact,   Parts came to approx $880.00 plus Labour.  I tried the Ratio Rockers with this combination…but didn’t like them…and subsequently went back to originals…and I felt a lot more comfortable with that.

From my understanding , adding the High Comp’ Pistons, basically turns a M.V motor to a D.J  apart from a different type of Injection System.

The above modifications…after about 4000kms are working very well. I'm able to remain in 4th gear…where before I would have to go to 3rd…on familiar ground. The next modification I will attempt will be to change the ratios of 3rd and 4th gears to reduce the RPM’s at speed.….I feel that a fair bit of home work will have to be done in this area before I order from the Albins Gear Shop!!...but that’s down the track a bit.    Oh I also had an Exhaust Guru here in Perth make me a Stainless Exhaust..(Muffler only)…which adds a bit of a boxer note to the package…but I cant say that it added any improvement at all. In the US you can buy extractors for the 2.1…pipes and muffler package..    www.volkscafe.com

Dont think I will be doing that, the engine has had $6000 spent on it
just before I bought it and Ive had the gearbox out another $2260
and the spare wheel carrier that I was about to buy has jumped up
another 50 euros plus another 95euros shipping.Just want to go
camping now.

Ken,

Thanks for you contribution. This is what the website is for and I
am glad that I set it up.

Chris,

Food for thought.

Stuart,

I am about to fit a Piranha dual battery management system. If you
want more details, ring me.

Ken,
you are right about the MV (Digifant)and DJ (Digijet) engine
differences.
Using the HC pistons on MV (and SS) engines is pretty common in the UK
where on rebuilds they often also use a mild cam, ditch the EFI and use
twin Webers, with quite good results I believe.
I am interested as to what or why you did not like the ratio rockers??
Also, what ratio did you use, and how much more "oomph" did they give
you?

Cheers,
Andy.

Why not use the Volkswagen system? Much cheaper and it's worked on mine
for 10 years.

Phill
Interested to know what modifications you made to your snorkel/air intake system.

Please elaborate.
