Fan Operation

Hi Guys

I need some advice. At what temperature should the radiator fan switch 'On'. Mine is coming on fairly late when engine temp is getting high. Also how long should the fan run for. Mine only goes for about 30sec then switches off. Need to give the auto electrician some basic info. Can anyone off a remedy? Much appreciated.

Regards

Michael

Michael,

In the absence of actual temperature readings, you will have to define “fairly high”.  The system normally works very well.  Is something happening at the moment that makes you think that it isn’t?

Micheal,it can take a long drive before the fan will cut in.About half way on the gauge your 1st fan should cut in.Somedays I can drive to a destination(without traffic) and the fan not come on.Whilst driving I have never had the 2nd fan come on,yes I have checked it.From your description your fan seems fine.

The temp gauge goes up to 3/4 on the gauge  before the fan comes on and then it only runs for about 30seconds before switching off.

Hi Micheal,

Fan action sounds about normal. Only question; why is it getting that hot? If it was just sitting idling for a long time, with no airflow, that could still be normal. Driving on the open road should rarely get it hot enough to activate the fan.

You are in Mallacoota, are you not?  I look like being down there for work next week, we should catch up. I’ll be working at the Pharmacy, Tuesday to Sat. I’m just replacing my mobile phone, but hopefully it will be working by then;- 0407 319 521.

Micheal, the first stage comes on 89-94c and off at 81c, second on at 95-100c and off at 87c. I must agree with the responses already though, what you describe does not sound like a fault. The NORMAL operating range of the cooling system is the entire centre black section of the gauge! Do you have coolant boiling out of the overflow? greg

Sorry for 2nd posting. No the engine isn'nt getting that hot on the open road. I'll wait to see how it behaves after picking up the vehicle from the mechanic in Pambula. It was the mechanic who I happen to have some faith in especially after my bad experience with the mechanic here,  who thought that the fan operation was way to short and that it should be coming on after it's passed the halfway marker on the gauge. But it appears from  members responses that all is normal, no matter where it goes within the gauge. Which leaves me wondering....... why have a gauge at all? And Greg, thanks, but coolant isn't boiling over.

Regards

Michael

 Hi Brian

Now thats a fair trip to win a sales. Look forward to seeing you there. There very nice people running the Pharmacy. I'll probably be picking up my van from the mechanic in Pambula who comes highly recommended on Tuesday, so perhaps see you on Wednesday. Are you coming up in the T5? Look forward to seeing you.

The guage measures engine water temperature.

The fan switch is operated by radiator water temperature.
