I have got to say I don't think washing a paper filter, that was not designed to be washed, is a good idea. I think the oem supplier was mann and to my knowledge they did not produce a washable filter. One of two things will happen, the fibers will shift and allow less air to pass or the filter will no longer work to the micron level intended. Another thing people do wrong is blow them out with compressed air, this allows bigger particals into the engine. Greg E

i have a unifilter in mine it has a foam type filter which fits over a wire cage the unit fits straight into the air filter housing, the filter comes loaded with oil and when you buy it service it you wash it in petrol squeeze dry then pour unifilter oil on it squeeze again to spread the oil they say under normal conditions it only has to be done every 10000ks, the benifit is that you can service the filter as you need if you are in dusty conditions if any members want the cat number let me know and i will pull mine out to get the details

it's my belief and understanding that any oiled foam type air filter really is not up to any real 'dust' use.

I don't think oiled foam types really stop a lot of heavy dust.

I don't know what your conditions are there where you drive .
I have driven in Baja California where silty dust is 3 feet deep ...really ..
it comes over he hood of a car like a bow wave on a boat ..
some serious dust.

I sure like the syncro 'swirl pre-filter' ..I run those on some of my vangons , even non-syncro ones..
those work really nicely.

I don't know if you guys run a 'real' syncro paper air filter element..
I haven't seen one for a long time actually.
What I usually see in Syncro's these days is the regular round 2.1 2WD  one..
circular and about 7 or 8 inches in diameter.
a 'real' Syncro paper air filter element is oval..
and fills up the whole air box.
They used to be as much as $ 70 US here in the US ..I should see if they can still be gotten.
That is one heavy duty air filter.
it's what I'd run in real dust.

i have a unifilter in mine it has a foam type filter which fits over a wire cage the unit fits straight into the air filter housing, the filter comes loaded with oil and when you buy it service it you wash it in petrol squeeze dry then pour unifilter oil on it squeeze again to spread the oil they say under normal conditions it only has to be done every 10000ks, the benifit is that you can service the filter as you need if you are in dusty conditions if any members want the cat number let me know and i will pull mine out to get the details

they don't really filter that well.
they're for 'in town' and  paved road use only as far as I'm concerned.

Scott,

These from a US seller look the real deal, good for $US20 if they are genuine.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Heavy-Duty-Air-Filter-Vanagon-VW-part-025-129-620B-/330467378893#ht_500wt_1182

Interesting though he won't ship these down-under. He has to package them for local shipping anyway, so shipping them to OZ via USPS would be a no brainer including completion of the simple customs declaration. All too hard apparently?

Ken

I don't agree Scott. K&N are used by some of the biggest off road racers in your country. As for the type of dust we have in this country we call it bull dust. Its red and the consistency off icing sugar. One drive down a road covered in it and you will never get rid of the staining. Manufactures come from all over the world to test the seals of their new cars in it. In my time preparing bmw bikes for these kind of conditions I found the genuine paper filters left a red film on the inlet tract, not so the oil soaked variety. The only down side for syncro people is that the filter listed is only the size of the 2wd filter. If it were the oval shape I would be alot happier. Greg E

Greg,

As previously mentioned on this forum I have the oval shape air filter with the oil soaked foam around it ("Finer" brand).
The down side according  to the LPG people is,that the engine might not get enough air??

Hey Theo, How did the trip go? The foam filters might slow the air flow but k&n use cotton gauze. They have greater flow than most stock filters which is why they are popular with the tuning crowd. The most important thing with gas is consistancy with the air cleaner. The tune will go out as the filter blocks. Change the air cleaner and bang there goes your afm and air box. Stick with your filter just keep it clean. Greg E

Ask the Seller. eBay has this quirky system of specifying areas where the Seller will ship. Once you've set your preferences, they make it difficult to change once your auction is up and running. Most Sellers don't realize you need to change in your preferences rather than in the auction itself.

Scott,

These from a US seller look the real deal, good for $US20 if they are genuine.

Interesting though he won't ship these down-under. He has to package them for local shipping anyway, so shipping them to OZ via USPS would be a no brainer including completion of the simple customs declaration. All too hard apparently?

We have the same type of dust.

Both 2WD and syncro have them in Australia.
The gas installer deleted mine, so I am looking for another.

That's just about the only filter that we had (2WD or 4WD). They are about $120 and may be hard to get.
Some meathead has fitted the $15 round one to mine.
