Fixing Mechanics Fixes

I spent yesterday repairing some of the fixes that some previous Melbourne mechanics had done to the Doka.

Oil cooler seal was leaking and found that a previous mechanic had just used a filter seal.

Need to replace some water hoses as
a previous mechanic had fitted fuel hose instead.

Replaced air filter element with correct type. 025 129 620B The correct element is getting hard to source. It may be worth stocking up with spares,

I now need to find an air filter pre-filter which was removed by gas conversion mechanic.
Does anyone have a spare for sale?

Phill
Hey Phill, I know a purist like yourself won't be impressed but I have just fitted a k&n filter. I know it has less surface area than the right one but has the advantage of being cleanable en route. It was $60 delivered from the states, last air filter I will ever buy for the van. I started using them when I was preparing BMW R1200gs's for stints in the desert we used to also fit a foam "sock" over the intake which could be replaced easy whilst touring. I think a sock over the right hand d pillar vent would be good for certain trips. Re the cyclone filter I have seen them going cheap on U.S. ebay. Are you removing the gas system? Greg E

K&N is a good alternative but be careful not to over oil it as it can damage the O2 sensor.

Undecided about the gas. At the moment I would not recomend having it fitted.

Phill,

I've mentioned this before here but the filtering material in the 025129620B oval filter looks much the same as the filtering material in a re-washable Donaldson brand air filter that was already installed in my T2 kombi 2 cab ute back in 1980. It's still there. It came with a tin of Donaldson "Concentrated Washing Compound For Air Filter Elements". Pretty simple, add 2 tablespoons of the compound (powder) to a bucket of warm water, dunk the filter in, leave it to soak for less than 24 hours, swill it about occasionally then rinse it in clean water and leave it out in the sun to dry. Then reinstall for another 20000klms or whatever takes your fancy.

I say this because I've already tried washing/cleaning the 025129620B oval filter using the same donaldson washing powder/bucket of warm water procedure.

Seems to me to be ok, can't see any change in performance, these oval filters are heavy duty and I'd be thinking twice about throwing them away after a single use.

Cheers.

Gas has had a reprieve.
Smell was from a bad battery.

I LOVE the gas system I fitted. Have done over 500K on gas and besides a few air flow meter that have gone to god.  it's the first mod I do to my syncro.  If install well you only need two holes in the body and only one of them needs to be sealed agains water.  My set up gives me a extra 600km range. work well for me.

Michael,

Have you ever done any accurate consumption measurements?   With petrol prices heading for the outer ends of the solar system, this could be very useful.

Hi Les,
I have not done any accurate consumption measure for a while.  I will be heading back down to Vic next week so I can do a bit of a highway trial and get some numbers.  I will be heading down the hume so will be sitting on 110km most of the time so not the mose economic.  I have a feeling I was getting about 12 L/100 just crusing along. but I will dig up my records and have a look.  also I'm running a bit higher compression than normal so that would help.

AFMs are soon to be NLA

Maybe I will learn to like it but it just seems like a hassle.

Phill
Phill
The two companies in Vic that I know of thay use to rebuild and calibrate AFM's can no longer supply the boards.  Last time my father was talking to them he pointed out that with some mine mods one of the early ford AFM can be used.  not sure if they looked into it or not.  Only reason we know is that back in 1990 when we destroyed our first AFM the ford one was the only thing that was a close enough match to work. Not sure on the model, would  need to look it up.

You also have to factor in the other costs involved. Engine wear, anual inspections, having halfwits working on your car, AFMs etc.

Hey Michael, Changing to a hot wire air flow meter would be the go. Lots of homework to set up, but doable. I have cut and past the following from Go Westy's site. Greg E

We also offer a “hot wire” air mass sensor substitute for the restrictive, problematic, and no longer available from Bosch “air flap box” air flow meter currently employed on all waterboxers.  We are currently working on a completely new, state of the art electronic fuel injection system to replace the outdated Digifant system. This will ultimately extract EVEN MORE reliable power. This "plug 'n' play" upgrade will be available in the coming months and will further improve top-end performance of all our performance engines already on the road.

I should be able to get the cyclone locally as nearly all T3s had them in Australia.
K&N is a good alternative but be careful not to over oil it as it can damage the O2 sensor.

Undecided about the gas. At the moment I would not recomend having it fitted.
