For sale: dead non-lock gearbox + some other gearbox questions

Hi All,

Finally drove my van home today. What a nice feeling. I have a few gearbox related concerns as below.

First, gearbox oils. I know this one has been bounced around before, the synthetic vs. mineral etc. and a side note, I had redline put in a few months before my last box died, but it was probably on it's way anyway. But just wanted to check - Castrol VMX 80 - ok?

Second, if anyone wants it, I have my ex-telstra non-lock gearbox for sale, minus bell housing and minus input shaft. Apparently the pinion has a chunk missing so likely the crown wheel cactus also, as well as some good shrapnel attached to magnetic plug. But, may be of use to someone for other bits that may (or may not) be good for rebuilding. Would I be silly to ask maybe $150 for this? Open to offers. Would like it gone soon. I'm living in Ryde, NSW at the moment, but happy to come for a bit of a drive to deliver if necessary and not too far.

Finally, installation of vacuum plumbing etc. This probably won't happen for a little while, due to reductions in fun tickets, though is there a good mechanic who may be familiar with the non diff-lock to diff-locking syncro job who is a bit closer to Sydney than Rudi?

And a side note, my mechanic was very impressed with how solid the locking diff is, and suggested that electronic solenoids may be more reliable to actuate the diff lock than the factory vacuum line setup - anyone ever considered this possibility?

Ok, that is all for today. Cheers all. Sam.
I'll take the gearbox Sam.

VMX 90 should be OK

re
", and suggested that electronic solenoids may be more reliable to actuate the diff lock than the factory vacuum line setup"

I've often thought of some way, any way, to do it other than the vaccum operated system ..
not because that is unrelaible but because with a subaru engine installation using an adatper system..
the diff lock actuator which is a bit of a bother to remove and reconnect ..
has to be removed just to get the starter out ...
so due to that ..
I've always though .......what about a big fat cable to operate it ..perhaps marine engine control type heavy duty cable and knob system .
the electric solinoids sound interesting ..
there's need for 'pull' and 'push' of course ..
and the vaccum capsule device provides that nicely.
that's my only real complaint..
the actuator's interfernce with getting the starter in and out.

so you're pleased with your new set up ?

Hi Scott,

Pleased to be back on the road! Thanks for your help in this.

The taller 3rd and 4th are nice, though does slow her down that bit more. Nice to be able to do 110km/h on the highway at 3,800 rpm now instead of 4,200rpm, though for a diesel gearbox, is it still a bit high for a diesel to cruise at 3,800rpm for extended periods? Still hope to put a tdi with mechanical pump in when I am rich and famous.

Will be pleased when I can actually use the locking diff also, and no longer have to fear driving through big mud patches, though will have to wait a little while on this one unfortunately due to fun tickets and complaints of the other half.

Cheers, Sam

hi ..
all right ...your syncro is getting better and better  !
that sounds nice.....66kph at 3,800 rpm.

as for 3,800  to 4,200 rpm for a stock syncro factory diesel...those are 1.6 TD's ....
pushing a big heavy van ..
and only 1600 cc's , so not like it's a high torque low rpm diesel ..
it's just a little delicate thing pushing to big and heavy  van, so I would expect them to be geared that way, if talking factory 1.6 TD Syncro.   3,800 would  be starting to get into any real power band on a 1.6 TD.   Most T3's seem geared to me to want to run at 4,000 rpm at any pretty decent highway speed.
1.9 TDI's are a differerent story though , and much more about low rpm torque, probably even power starting to fade away above 4,000 rpm in those.

you'll have to look for excuses and opportunities to try out your new locking rear diff now !
what fun.

Hi Sam,  please let me know when rich and famous has finally arrived because I have got the cable tdi with all the gear and it’s waiting to be installed somewhere. Don’t forget to call in when heading for Valla......... Hartmut

No worries, it's the second one I have missed out on; guess I didn't get up early enough this morning,

Hi Hartmut,

If only I convince the other half that a Tdi is much better to spend the money on than a rock (that is, diamond engagement ring). Unfortunately I don't think I'll be doing Valla this year either :( Sigh, wish I could take you up on this one, please hold onto it for me, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Hope everything is going well for you,
Sam

Hope everything is going well for you,
Sam

Sam,

You are not alone. My fiancé asked why I don't sell a few of my toys to buy her that nice gift that from Belgium or South Africa. I thought she said buy 3 Carats as in a nice T3 big window Caravelle from RSA or maybe a plush model Syncro from Mike Plompen's consigned T3's. She asked about color? I said Orly Blue, Tornado Red, or Escorial Green. She said 'D' or 'E'. What!? Then she mentioned VVS. I said, "No honey. They are called VSS --- as in Vehicle Speed Sensors."

I was dreaming ZZZ vins on a VW. She had her eye on a clear rock at Tiffany's. Cost more than any of my Syncros.

Women have a different idea of Carats!

Although I was lucky, mine bought me the syncro back in 1990.

Seems to me that we are a pretty tight nit family. My girl bought me a brand new Syncro Trapo in 1988 --- it only cost me a 1.02 carat VVS, set into a ring. When she cleaned under the farmhouse the VVS came undone and never surfaced again. I sold the Transporter and bought the Tristar in 89. It did not cost me much for this transaction, however when we had to sell the Tristar in or about 94 that is when troubles started so she bought the Tristar back 98 to get the peace back into the house. This time 'round it cost me heaps of carats in fact all of the little precious rocks we had brought with us when leaving SA. There you go who cares anyway, as long as we have a Syncro or two in the garage............HA.

Hart,

You have a sensational girl there! She seems to understand that marriage bliss = owning at least 1 syncro preferably 2 and in Ben T's case preferably 15.

Ben T - your missus is the queen of them all to allow you to indulge in so much Syncro!

By the way - where do you park them all?

Cheers,

My apologies for not paying attention to my mailbox. I am sending out messages today that have been in my outbox for some time. BEN

Skot,

I only have two Syncros now. One is parked in front of the house. The other has been masquerading as a Syncro for sale for 6 years. My girl is a smart one. If would rather a chase a car than a skirt. Both are equally expensive but you can actually take one home to your girlfriend -- without losing your head, or anything else for that matter, in your sleep.

Thanks for clearing that up Ben T.

I still think it takes a tolerant woman to stick by a Syncro loving male. We have all obviously found a rare flock of those particular females luckily.
