Ford springs anyone

Hi All

I heard that springs out of a ford falcon could be used to raise the front and add spacers to level out the rear springs? Not a track that I'm aiming to go down, but out of interest wondered if anyone had heard of this, what year model, how effective etc. Similar to the springs out of the 2wd t3 at all?

Sam
Hey Sam and all,

Below is alink to a UK website called Campervanculture. THey are all syncro westfalia nutters and like a few eekends away in thier syncros.

On the website further down the page is a link to a video of how to add spacvers to the rear of the syncro.

They make it look very easy and one side took them 12 minutes to do.

Amazing.

Cheers,

Hi sam

I have recently put xd falcon springs onto the front of my syncro and they have proved to be very good. They come in spring thickness increments of 1mm and height increments of 1cm, so you can tune in the spring you want. You can factor in the weight you carry ( heavy camper, which mine is) and the height you want.

All i had to do was angle grind the flat profile of the last bit of the top 4cm to a circular profile, and dremmel out the rubber insert at the top of the spring, as the xd spring 1mm larger diameter.

The end result is a higher stance but for me the most important thing is the improved ride, less hammer over the dirt roads i often travel on.

The next thing im doing is putting Nissan patrol (gu) front springs on the rear, it appears that they will fit and match the falcon fronts. I am looking at these today.

As a stop gap i have put spacers on the rear but it is not good long term because even though you get the matching height you don’t get improved suspension movement

Brian, would be interesting to know how it goes with the rear springs. Would be a great alternative to buying springs from overseas or having them custom made.

Spacers dont necessarily have a negative impact on suspension travel mind you as the bump stop will usually limit upward travel before the spacer/spring coil bind unless you have an enormously thick spacer. Fitting spring spacers for up to 40mm lift actually increases suspension travel over stock unless you speak of wheel drop down which ofcourse will be limited unless you correct the problem with steeper angle cv joints and longer shocks/extenders.

Also very interested to hear how the Ford Falcon and Nissan Gu spring setup works. I'm actually going to talk to someone this afternoon about having some springs made. My van is an ex-telstra with a fairly light set-up and it seems alot of aftermarket springs are more orientated at heavy campers.

I'd be really interested to get the technical specs for the standard springs and any other alternatives. Designing the correct spring is a bit of a black art to me at the moment. I'd also be interested to know what people think is the standard ride height (hub centre to arch). I'm interested how much mine has sagged if at all.

Erik,

How would a spacer increase suspension travel? You still have the same spring. Seems to me the suspension can only travel as far as the springs go. You might have more ground clearance. But the ability of the springs to compress and extend should be unaltered.

You would have more compression stroke and less rebound, hence the need for shock extenders to regain rebound(and also increase total travel). Greg E

Hi eric

My thought on spacers is ------- if, lets say, your spring and spacer length is 20cm and of that distance you have 5cm of it spacers. If you replace the spacers with more spring and thus have 20 cm of spring alone, then in my opinion you have more spring to act against a bump and thus a better ride.

What do you think about my train of thought.

Thanks for clarifying greg that's exactly how I'd like to have worded it.. I have had to go the way of porsche 930 cvs and 2" shock extenders for the sake of regaining stock rebound and ofcourse increasing total travel.

Hey guys.

A bit old topic, but new for me.
I'm trying to find the easiest solution to lift my syncro (tintop).
Was looking at the campervanculture videos and used their tutorial to lift the back - wanted to do the same for the front, but the source for front shims doesn't exist anymore. There is a way to machine new ones, but as there is no drawings or templates available, would of been a bit fiddly to make it right.

Would that be a straight swap? How much lift could I expect. I don't want to go more than 50mm overall front lift.

Any suggestions highly appreciated.
Thanks
Beau

Hi Beau,  driving a doka tristar i found myself in a similiar situation. Bought a set
of Seikel ( german springs) lift was approx 40mm but comfort was non existent
Far too hard for my truck so sold them at DotVW as they seem to be perfect for
a Camper . From my experience 50mm is cutting it fine when it comes to our standard CV joints.
What i did to come up with 50mm, i had them streched by a spring works in SYD. That was about 20 something years ago. Sofar they have not failed. Btw
Did the same to our Passat vagon , one of the 7 they imported in the eary 90s.
