Fridges / power / campers

Hi Joachim.

I have yet to get time to get my Syncro solar Pannel out in good sunshine and get a decent amps reading into my aux battery. Maybe today I hope.
I have a Westfalia roof so I'm wondering if the tilting it creates will be sufficient to get my solar Pannel better facing the sun when camping.

I'm a bit worried how I would get up on top of my pop top to adjust a tilting Pannel as its really high and I have nothing to grab onto really.

Hamish.

Update.
I've had my 85Ah aux on charge for 36 hrs now and today I've stocked my fridge with 3x hot six packs and then I turned it on with a multimeter wired in series between the power wire to the fridge.

The fridge to turned to 6 / 7 for coldness. Fridge just turned on.

Results seem strange.
The fridge is cycling say every 3-5 min with a peak amp draw of only 0.3 A for about 20 sec dropping to 0.15A for 1.5 minutes and then dropping to 0.0A draw say another 1-2 minutes.

Then it tends to just cycle between a peak amp draw 0.20-0.0 A.

What seems strange to me is that a peak amp draw of only 0.3 A on a hot fridge being turned on suddenly and a problem.

Hamish. I have a boot strut to help push the panel and hold my panel up into position.(can be seen in the pics I posted). I can raise and lower the panel from ground level with a length of 16mm dowel with a hook screwed into the end of it. Easy peasy and cheap. Bill

I think because I'm short and my car is really high it's gonna be tricky.
Hamish, If you turn the thermostat all the way up the evaporator will freeze up the compressor will cut in and out. Try it at 3 or 4. It sounds like you have your amp meter on the wrong scale. It is all plausible if you move the decimal point across one point. Greg E

Fridge turned to 3.5 / 7 coldness
Amp meter switched to another A setting

Now this looks more realistic
Max draw was 6.5 to start and after 5 min hovering around 4.5 amps.

After driving at 100 km/h for 40km its
3:30 pm.

The Sun is approximately 120deg relative to solar Pannel with the pop top raised as shown trying to be tilted towards it and the solar Pannel generates 3.4 A

Then With pop top lowered and flat the Amps created drops to 1.6A.

And finally i checked the fridge its now now drawing about 4.3A.

I think I will need to keep an eye on this to determine if my 85AH aux battery and fridge usage is sufficient.

It's quite interesting how much a impact the inclination of the Pannel to the sun makes.

Update
This is becoming quite a project in itself and im learning a fair bit about solar.

I have now experienced a second mppt solar controller failure and I have put that down to the poor china made unit supplied from jaycar in the fist place.

Because I'm running a 24 V Pannel and using a 12V aux battery set up the mppt controller is required to produce step down to 12 V.

I am currently reviewing which brand mppt controllers are of better quality and so far I have found 2 brands.

Being:

'Morningstar' USA made. ($340)
Remote sold desperately.

'Votronic' German made supplied with remote control Pannel. ($300)

The german units are newer and offer a dual battery charging feature which sounds nice where the car battery can receive an additional trickle charge whilst your auxiliary battery still receives the major charge from your solar Pannel.

Wet cell batteries apparently loose charge more easily than AGM batteries if left unattended so even if your car is left parked for a month the car starter battery is always topped up with the German unit.

The USA made unit is simple and the manufacturer has been around for a while. It purely regulates the charge to your aux battery and that's all  and also costs a little bit more (possibly paying for the name).

In newzealand over 500 of the German units have been fitted to campers/ motor homes.

I'm undecided as to which brand to acquire still. Like the functionality of the German unit but I like to keep things simple like the USA unit.

Other useful information I've since gathered:

- the AGM battery is designed to be recharged up to 1700 cycles in its life if it is never depleted by more than 20% of its Ah. If its recharged to 50% meaning you depleted it by 50% then it's life cycle expectancy is reduced to only 700 times of being recharged.

-A battery monitor can be fitted to the battery to Keep an eye on its depletion %. Possibly a good investment considering it just cost me $420 for a AGM 120Ah battery.

- my fridge has been noted to draw about 45Ah per day being 45/120=38% of my 120ah aux battery. So in other words I'm exceeding the ideal draw down of 20% here (if camping for longer periods and not starting the car) and therefore leading to reducing my aux battery life by 1/2.  What is therefore suggested is to install another identical 120Ah battery in parallel to bring my combined aux battery capacity to 240Ah and 20% of that capacity is 48Ah remembering that my fridge generally draws 45Ah per day (derived from 4Ah draw over 12 hrs~1/2 time on 1/2time off).

And

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT)
= These maximise the power out put of your solar Panels. Interesting video link bellow for those interested.

Hi All Syncro Nutters,

We organised a Sydney based weekend getaway this Long Weekend and
strangely no Sydney siders turned up???

Anyway, Paul Nevin (Newcastle) and I (Central Coast) managed to find
Newnes Ruins Camping area late on Friday night when I say late it was
between 7:00pm and 7:30pm but very dark.

Both of us decided to head towards the glow worm tunnel first (Paul
actually got there and had a brief view before helping a bloke get his
horse out of a creek near the tunnel entry), mine was because my GPS had
a melt down.

Anyway we both ended up doing the "Blackfellows Hand Trail" in complete
darkness with Paul only having low-beam headlights and my high beam
working but my spotties not.

Anyway, it was fairly rough in the last third with a few wrong turns and
back tracking yet we both managed to find Newnes and get ready for
camping with a small pathetic fire.

Next day we took the walking trail through the amazing ruins of the
shale oil project and on our return we met up with Michael and Tina who
took as to some Aboriginal hand paintings on this amazing overhanging
rock face (our version of the wave rock).

We then parted ways and Paul and I did the Blackfellows Hand trail in
daylight before a side track down to the "lost City" which is a natural
rock formation. To get to the Lost City we had to drive down probably
the worst track I have ever driven on with loads of deep water filled
holes and other deep rutted holes.

Loads of fun but scary in places.

We decided to camp half way back along the trail as the nearby camp
sites were full of nutty dirt bike riders or other campers.

Today we went back to the glow worm tunnel early, drove through a rock
tunnel, parked in the car-park with only 1 other car, then walked out to
the glow worm tunnel and then along the old railway line through a
rainforest lined creek to a lookout. By the time we returned, the car
park was full of about 50 vehicles with at least 2 people per car.

A bit of a careful drive out before we parted ways - Paul heading up the
Putty Road for another bush camp before heading home and I went to
Lithgow for some much needed fuel.

Overall a great weekend.

Hope it can happen again soon.

I have attached a couple of photos for those that get emails and will
endeavour to put some in the photos section if I can manage it.

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers,

Skot

The white syncro is Paul's - its a nice rig with twin diff-locks and a decoupler (full house) and 30 x 9.5 R15 tyres on Mercedes wheels.

No Worries Ben.

I have always liked excavation.

It was great - only rained the day before we got there.

Hence the tracks were full of water and the rest slippery and totally lacking dust.

Was easily bearable at night in a good sleeping bag (in the van) and comfortable outside next to a roaring fire which we had going last night as there was firewood everywhere round the spot we found.

No excuses next time Ben!

Cheers,

Skot

Also,

I forgot to mention Leighton inviting me over for a chat and to see his T25 Camperise converted 2wd window van on the Friday arvo before I headed to Lithgow and Newnes.

This was under a JustKampers cover awaiting the birth and growth of his second child which was due a few days ago yet seems to not want to hurry out into the world.

Best of luck with the wife and bub Leighton and thanks for the chat.

Cheers,

Skot

Not sure Hamish.

You would have to ask Paul.

It was too covered in mud to see in there!

Paul does have Fox Shocks and I think he has Go-Westy springs.

Bruce CQ

Hi, Hamish. Paul has the Fox shockers with the external chambers and GoWesty springs with double spacer plates at the rear.
Cheers,
