Front Chassis Required

Does anyone know of a T3 Syncro breaking up ? I have bent my front Chassis and need a replacement. I live in Denmark Western Australia but can have one shipped over if I can find one. The chassis I am referring to has all the front suspension and the wheel carrier bolted to it!

Cheers

Tony
Tony, sounds a nightmare, dare we ask what happened?

The only place i could think of would be syncronutz and brickwerks in the UK or Busman in Belgium. Syncronutz sell parts from dismantled syncros and people in OZ have had them shipped.

You sure it can't be straightened?

Most of the body stuff could probably sourced from a 2WD. Then see what you need from a syncro. I'd prefer to use Aussie s/h bits due to the rust issue.

Hi again Gary and all,

This is what happened.....

Last Christmas, two years after puchasing my ex Telstra Syncro,
and working on it in my shed {as we do} I set off on my first
four wheel drive trip.Having obtained the required permit I
travelled from Kalgoolie / Warburton across the Great Central
Highway to Uluru where I spent Christmas. After a couple of weeks
I found myself at The Pinnacles, and decided to return to Perth
on a Four Wheel Drive Track down 75km to Lancellin. The coastal
track was both soft sand and large rocks! About halfway I got
lost, where the track split 2 ways. I ended up down a dead end
at the bottom of a Huge sand dune! Having managed to turn around
my front tyre came off! I changed the wheel but the spare wheel
was smaller now than the other three!!
When I got back to the 2 way split I came across a guy in a Land
Cruiser, who offered to guide me to Lancellin. All was well for
about 10k and he was driving around sand dunes and along the beach
etc going faster as we progressed! After a very rocky section he
was on good ground, and speeded up! In order not to get lost again,
I went far too fast on the rocks !! This is where I bent both the
front chassis and one of the rear bars protecting the gearbox !!

The result was I have a bent front chassis, a dud viscous coupler,
a damaged gearbox, {through driving with one wheel too small} plus
four oval alloy wheels!! I have so far had the alloy wheels fixed,
the gearbox is being rebuilt, but I have only just found out that
the front chassis is bent!

I think a Syncro member "Paul" in NSW will have one in 3/4 weeks
but am keen to get into more trouble, but will wait if I cant get
one sooner.
Sorry the answer took so long, but thats what happened on my first
four wheel drive trip, and most of you will already know what
happened on my second trip when I purchased Werners Syncro recently
and broke down several times on the way home!!
I bought my Syncro for some adventure, and boy it has given me
that OK plus a lot of unwelcome expense! I just hope that I have
now learned a lesson on how to four wheel drive {slowly}

Cheers

Tony

Nah, get yourself a good GPS so that you don't get lost in the first place, then you will avoid the situation that Tony found himself in!

Modern technology doesn't hold the answer to every problem..... Good
luck with repairing your syncro, Tony.

Interested to hear of your plans, Gary. We have dreams of doing a
similar thing.

There is a family from Argentina here in Northcote that has been
travelling around the world for the last 8 years in a vintage
Graham-Paige car with wooden wheels built in 1928. On the way they
have had 4 kids! So, by comparison, driving a syncro around Australia
should be a walk in the park.... As an author, you may be interested
to know that they're funding their trip on the proceeds of a book
they've written about their experiences.

Francesca.
Hi Francesca

Yes, agreed modern technology may not always be the answer, it is really the lack of air conditioning in the syncro that is the problem. It's not feasible to retrofit without an upgrade to the engine (mine is a 1.6 turbodiesel). My kids (2 & 4) can't cope once it gets above 27 degrees. We have a modern car too and on the last few camping trips in the summer we've taken that too with just me driving the syncro. The rear seats in my van are also really far back so you can't even pass the kids anything when underway. Everyone loves it when we are actually camping, it is just getting there!

We are planning to go back to the UK to live for a few years in about 18 months time. We are considering a 3-4 month trip around Oz ending up in Perth where we'll ship the syncro back to the UK. It came from there in 87 so reregistering in Britain it shouldn't be too hard.

It is all in the early stages at the moment though....

I'd love to read more about the vintage car family, do they have a website?

Cheers, see you at Bunnings one day no doubt!

Hi Gary,

Yes, I know exactly what you mean about kids cooking in the back. I
haven't dared yet to look into an alternative to our defunct Prestige
air-con set-up (too many other things to spend money on). I think we
might go for a sliding rear window first up - a bit of ventilation in
the back would help! They are a long way away from the point of view
of passing things and hearing what they're saying.

That sounds like a nice way to repatriate yourselves and the syncro.
You're not tempted to drive overland, I guess??? Our next big trip is
likely to be to the Flinders Ranges in the spring.

Cheers,

Francesca.

PS Saw another syncro in the Bunnings Preston carpark not long ago!

Francesca,

Ken has been looking into the Prestige air conditioner and we will no doubt get a lot of valuable information from him when he has finished.  With a bit of luck, it will come before the summer and might set you on the path to a cooler vehicle.  In any event, the sliding side windows are a big improvement.

Les,

Like you, other things seem to get in the way, meaning some projects get
put on the backburner. I just need to get my act together on the a/c
project, sooner than later would be nice.

Someone may have experience on this ... I don't. But in my view, the
Prestige dashmounted a/c is pretty much a compromise, offers some relief
for front seat people but I doubt whether it would penetrate much
further back than that. It also has to contend with the heat radiating
into the cabin from the front footwells. Even worse in high summer. I
recall someone saying ... install a sliding plastic sheet across the van
behind the front seats to contain the cool air where its most needed.
Having passengers out back ... well, they may complain a tad about that
setup.

I found when I have the side sliding windows open, gets a bit noisy,
buffetty and also in due course, if you have flyscreens, the wind
buffetting tends to loosen the flyscreen beading so the fly screens
start to come loose. What to do besides leave the kids at home? ... I
have no idea. Maybe dampened Tshirts and wet face washers? It's a bit
hard.

Probably the best a/c system would be the Caravelle overhead ducted
system, factory fitted, that would probably deliver cool air more
efficiently to rear passengers. Pretty rare, no good for a pop top
camper though.

No good ideas at all Francesca, sorry.

Cheers.

Ken

The Caravelle overhead system works very well and I wish that I could have afforded it when I had the chance.

Westies had a different system.
Ken

I managed to improve the heat radiating up from the footwells and dash area which is caused by all those radiator pipes underneath by lining the floor with thinsulate insulation. I pulled all the carpets and mats out and then cut it to fit.

The stuff i bought is a thin foam with a layer of foil on one side and adhesive on the other. It made a big difference to both the heat and road noise.

I bought it from ebay but it may be available in car accessory places.

Ken,

Further to Gary's information, VAG had an insulation kit available for the front footwells of the T3.  I remember reading about it a long time back and the source also had pictures of the insulation and its installation.  I will have a rummage through old files and see if I can find it.  Having patterns would be a considerable help.

Gary,

Methinks you're just being mischievous adding yet another project to my
"to do" list ... haha

Anyways, sounds cool. However I have the original front rubber floor
liner and the raised syncro centre platform thingy. I reckon I'd have to
demolish lots just to get at it all.

I suspect the main source culprit of footwell heat isn't so much the
coolant piping, mostly the air rushing through the radiator and then
hitting the outside faces of the footwells. Gets worse with the fan
operating as well.

I could try some foil on its own, there is already a sheet noise
dampener in place under the floor liner. Thanks Gary.

Cheers.

Les. Yes I vaguely recall that also, I think I've seen pictures of it in
some doco I have here. Something like more cardboard baffles, not sure.
I'm only guessing at this stage, but having now fitted my 15" spare
wheel underneath, there may no longer be enough spare space to fit that
kit. I'll see if I can find what I've got on this again to refresh my
memory. Cheers.

back and the source also had pictures of the insulation and its
installation. I will have a rummage through old files and see if I can
find it. Having patterns would be a considerable help.
