Front CVs and shaft kits

Go Westy have new Front CV kits for $170 US + shipping. This seems to be a good option. The only downside to these is they have rubber boots.
Scott and others what do you think?
Ben,

Go Westy have fairly good quality parts from memory and I cant see them skimping on these. However, maybe Ben T and Scott (Turbovans) could advise as they probably see them more regularly.

Cheers,

Scott

Hart, just got off the phone with Paul.He made a call and tracked what he says is the last outer CV joints available. He also said that you can use the rear CV for the inners on the front. Will look into that.

Bloody good salesman that Paul.

How come he always finds the last one left of every syncro component? Man is gifted.

He said that he had two complete CV shafts that he was keeping for one of his Syncros. The last two outer CVs are $313 each. The GoWesty new shafts are appealing.

I have heard that they are not good quality.

I have been told to not buy anything but Lobro.
Phil,Who/were is lobro? The GW ones are suppose to be EMPI.
What is the quality issue?

Lobro is an OEM supplier to VW, ordinary made in Germany. EMPI is an
aftermarket supplier, axles made in Taiwan or China. I can't recall
which.

There was some discussion regarding the EMPI axles on the worldwide
Syncro forum. Consensus, IIRC, was they were am acceptable alternative
given the lower price. As far as durability, they not likely to be
equal to the Lobros. However, it was argued that they were an
excellent insurance policy against drivetrain damage.

Wouldn't you rather break and axle instead of your expensive transaxle?

EMPI is sold worldwide. You might find there are cheaper sources than
GoWesty. I use a local source. Fortunately for me, shipping is very
reasonable as EMPI's US headquarters is in California where I live.

I have quite a bit of experience with various (the new) EMPI products.
In general they look better on paper and in photos than in real life.
The durability factor was probably not high in the specification
charts. For the money, they can be an alternative die some people.
They do make some interesting parts not readily available from other
manufacturers.

I am disturbed that some of their products are being peddled by
various Syncro specialist without disclosing the EMPI connection. EMPI
doesn't always stamp their products. It's very easy for an
unscrupulous vendor to pass of some gear as their own. For example,
don't be surprised if the Porsche 930 flanges you big money was made
by EMPI. Haven't heard any complaints about them. But then again, how
do we keep track when buyers think the parts were custom machined by
someone else.

In sent EMPI paper catalogs to a couple of folks who got factory AC
brackets from me. If any of those folks had a chance to look over the
book, see the axle and output flange section.
