Front diff mounts

All,
Has anyone ever, grabbed hold of the nose of the front diff, and pushed and pulled on it.
I have dicovered that when I do this,I can move the diff on its mounts. The rubber mounts seem fine and the bolts are tight.
Does anyone else experience this,or know what I am telling you about?
Thanks
Never tried it but I would say there would be a bit of give in the mounts as with all mount points on a drivetrain.

I noted how much a 75 model 2L engine moves between gear changes. Almost looked like half a foot in play.

How does this work ?  Please explain ! The front axle/diff is mounted to the driveshaft and that shaft does not give much at all, so where am I wrong ?  Hart

Hart.

It would have to be a whole drivetrain thing. Most probably you and I couldn't move it but Ben just has that superhuman strength and can make anything move.

Cheers,

Hart, when I push/pull on the f/diff the diff moves on the mounts. It looks like to much movement to me.The reason I am worried about it is,that I will not worry about getting my unis and shaft balanced before I work this out.Has anyone ever replaced the mounts?Do they squash up over time?

the normal way to test if things move or are looser than they should be is to lever them..
A  nice big pry-bar lever  is a diagnostic tool, particularly for suspension and drivetrain. things.
Brute or raw strength is not needed.

Scott and group.I would deem the movement excessive.Just wondering if a few of you could try and see how much their diff moves.I didnt discover this until yesterday.

Ben,
Nice to meet you on Sunday ... it was unexpected at the time on my part.

Ok I'm confused as to what you mean. You seem to be saying if I push/pull in a forward/aft direction, it is possible to see forward/aft front diff movement. I know my front diff is bolted rigid in place with bolts and plates underneath it such that it is totally rigid in place. Am I misunderstanding you then. I see/sense no movement you seem to be speaking of.
Cheers.

Find it on Domain.com.au Need a new place to live?
Scott/ Ben,

I went and tried to move mine with a pinch bar and nothing - didn't move a millimetre!

Possibly something you didn't tighten up Ben in your de-coupler installation or maybe that Point plommer Rd rattled something loose?

Cheers,

Skot

Ben/Skot,  yip, you might be able to move the axle sideways    maybe. It can be moved for/aft as in the DVD Fahrzeug Instandsetzung  (Vehicle Repair) , as the holes for the 4 bolts are elongated. Loosening the bolts is the is the first step when taking out the  driveshaft. When the bolts are tight there should be no movement possible.  hart

Ben,

You can call around and have a look at mine if you like.

There is a 4WD swap meet at Revesby South Public School (Vega St) put on by the Landcruiser club on Sunday if you are after anything. You should have time before work as it opens at 7.30.

I haven't been for a few years but they used to have a lot of camping gear, 4WD stuff etc. for sale.

Scott,Hart,Ken and group. The movement I am talking about is up and down.I need dry daylight time to investigate futher.I can "bench press'' action my f/diff @ the tailshaft end and get some up and down movement.Whilst the tailshaft is dropped, the front diff moves like a cock in a...When looking at the front diff mounts there is a gap between the washer and the rubber mount. The nuts are tight.Has anyone experienced the mounts squashing over time.

Home in the morning and as usual at work after 12.
Ben,

My front CV's clicked before I replaced them with new ones. The height of my syncro causes increased wear on my CV's front a rear but the new ones have done about 25,000kms with no complaints to date - touch wood.

Get some new front CV's!

Cheers,

Scott

Had a good look at the mounts today.Whilst on the hoist,I could easily move the F/diff and there was a metalliac tap noise whist moving the diff by hand(up and down). There was also movement side to side.
I found that the locator, plastic??spacers, between mouled rubber bushes were not located.I put them back together properly and tightened the bolts. The diff was much more solid,no metallic tap,but still apears to be moving around.
The rubber moulded bushes appeared'squashed',and was soft to push the metal insert in the middle.I will replace them when I get some.
I have been trying to diagnose a very slight vibration and are ruling out possibilities before I replace my unis.I will not do the unis before I know the diff is not moving around.
I believe that I have now inherited a new Syncro fun job.My front CVs are clicking whilst I pull into my driveway.I know I should avoid tight turns. They also click in the sand as well on tight turns,I went out Boat Harbour today to test this.
Has anyone else experience this?

Scott, the clicking was not there one day and the next day I heard it.Almost gave me a heart attack!I thought at first it was final drive.Just recently, after I fitted my decoupler my VC has become aggresive.Previously,I did 90% of the year driving with tailshaft dropped. When the tailshaft was installed I could do these tight turns without a CV issue.
Did you have any problems getting the shaft out of the hubs?Did you do inners and outers? How much did it cost?

Ben,

Mine was a couple of years ago and I did all of the front inners/ outers and they had no problems extracting them - well they didn't winge about it anyway.

It was done by a mob in Woy Woy area. They used new German made CV's and they have been quiet ever since with the centre shaft installed and no de-coupler.

Cheers,

Scott
