Front Differential

Hullo members,
When draining the oil from my front diff in preparation to replace the vc I was dismayed to see the cluster of metal filings on the magnetic drain plug. This has led me to look at the availability of replacement parts, namely crown wheel and pinions should the need arise. There seems to be a bit of play when turning the driveshaft flange (clack, clack) but I am not sure how much is OK before being concerned. The vehicle has more diff noise than when I first bought it, but over a long period of years it's hard to judge just how much the increase is. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hullo Jon,

Coming home in my Trakka (1990- 250.000km) from Syd Nationals I detected a diff noise ( a bit like howling Dingoes,,...) . I made it home and out comes the box. My oil plug looks like yours, heaps of shavings. We took it apart and all looks fine, except for one broken shift rod bushing. However the pinion bearing did not feel to good so we cut the cage to look at the inner race and to see the damage.

The inner race is destroyed and because we caught it in time the damage is relatively small. I hope to have it back in service soon.

You are fortunate to have a trible A gear box man in Qld, have a word with him. Some one will give you his e/m or his ph# , his name is Rudi.

Good luck,

Hartmut

Hartmut,
I suppose I will have to remove my front diff (again) and have it taken apart to check for wear. Unfortunately the gearbox specialist you recommend is as far away from me as you can get in Australia as I am in the south west corner of Western Australia. Thanks for your input.

I am also interested in how much back lash others have in their front diffs.I have always had some and wonder if this is the norm.

My second syncro is for sale on eBay again after not meeting reserveof $2500 last try.
It's worth it for the spares.
The diff and VC were both in good working order.
