Front Suspension Questions.

Hi,

Question 1:
How do I get the anti-roll bar support link and bush off of the bar?

Question 2:
In my Haynes manual (which admittedly does not consider the Syncro), the upper wishbone
bushes are spot welded the the wishbone. This is not mentioned in my Bentley manual.
I am replacing mine and before I press attempt to get the bushes out, I'd like to know if this
is this the case on our Syncros?

All items are removed from the vehicle.
Thanks,

Andy.
Hey,

If i remember correctly, they are only spot welded on the 2wd vans, i dont think syncro's have the spot welds.

I think you should take it to an expert before you damage something, alot of parts are no longer available and you could be causing yourself a big hole in your hip pocket....

Hi Andy

Try using a two arm gear puller, making sure to lubricate the rubber bush with something like CRC spray.

I found this worked well – see attached photo.

Regard

Yurik

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Yurik I need to get hold of a puller to remove the CV joints from the axles so will try it on the
stabiliser as well.

Cheers,

Andy.

PS. I can't see the image. Is there a setting I need to change in my account?
Andy,

The website is set to allow pics to be attached to members' emails, so they should be coming through.  Make sure that your email programme isn't set to block attachments.  It came through on mine.

Yurik,

The puller worked well - thanks.
How did you get the same bushes back over the widened end of the anti roll bar?

Andy.
Very topical that front suspension bushes came up here the same day I had to have
some replaced.
I had gowesty springs fitted to my 89 Caravelle GL syncro camper a few months back.
Together with top front bushes.
Although I didn't know at the time, the front shocks were stuffed ( couldn't really tell until the taller springs showed no rebound damping )
Two months later, shocks (OME) are fitted but the front end still banging.
At a respected VW shop they showed me how stuffed the front bushes were.
Incorrect installation had wrecked the internal rubbers. They were also not spot welded as they should have been.
Up side is 280 mm ground clearance ( on 215/75/15 ) and better handling due to variable
rate front springs
Moral of the story here is stick with VW specialists. ( at least one you can trust )There's a lot of cowboys out there.

ps. One tip I read was to replace your VW coolant every three years as the anti corrosive properties are gone after this period. Still running an original motor at 265,000 ks.

Where did you read that?

Phill
Page 91 of the Owner's Handbook, Cooling System, starts with:

"The cooling system is filled at the factory with a permanent coolant which is not changed."

Given that the MV engine is susceptible to corrosion of the main studs if the incorrect coolant (or plain water), VAG is obviously confident in the permanent characteristics of their specified coolant.  It would be reasonable to assume that the later coolants specified would have the same permanent characteristic.

(After a period of heavy use, most cooling systems will benefit from a coolant change to get rid of the accumulations.)

I'm just wondering if someone has misread something, like the 3 year shelf life and ended up with an urban myth.

I thought we were talking about front suspension !!!! How did it change to coolant ??? l think some owners should get some fresh air and drive their syncros  and stop worrying about the end of the world coming tomorrow..................................

Todays update!

I had to pay mechanics to:
a) fit the stabiliser link over the new anti roll bar bush and;
b) remove the old upper control arm bushes and fit the new ones.

I have got one lower control arm off but on the other, the nut will
not budge with about a nut and a half of thread left to go. Time for a
nut splitter. That's what ya get for driving a bus that spent over a
decade on salted roads!

Andy.
