A re-seal kit is a good idea if your fuel lines are original. It is a big job though, especially if you want to do the tank!
Best thing first is to try and find the leak.
How full is your tank? If you smell fuel with out it running, and I assume you cannot find a drop anywhere, could be a simple leak on the low pressure side of the system.
Best to get under the car and look around then tank/fuel pump if it smells more in one area than another.
Follow the filler down to where it enters the tank, there is also a breather line there heading back to the filler.
Of the passenger side (underneath) is the pump, and from the left rear wheel well is the fuel send cover (in side of tank plus the evaporative system. All potential places to leak.
If it is in the pressure side, you can turn the ignition key on/off a couple of times (no need to start), this runs the pump and pressurizes the system, and may make leaks show up. Follow all the fuel lines up from the pump, through fuel filter and into the engine bay, around the injectors etc.
Definitely worth finding!

I guess if it was me, I would try and get some professional advice.
Is your mechanic nearby? Does he have a hoist?
That's a really neat Syncro you have, so I wouldn't take any chances.
It's great you noticed it.
Good luck.
