Thanks a lot for starting the ball rolling for Camperise.
Now we need further responses for Camperise looking for similarities or differences in approval numbers.

Any starters for the other known brand conversions please?

Ken, just finally picked up my camper syn from the road side where Car
Carriers dropped it . We drove it the 1.2km but it needs an engine rebuilt.
Too late now to inspect it, but it looks to be free of rust with the
exception of the front window. The poor Syn is so filthy, beyond belief. It
also has one swivel seat ,2 fairly new batteries an Engel fridge (no gas).
And a metho stove. No under belly water tank. Also 15" wheels, 319000 kms.
Talk to you about the conversion once I have inspected the bulli. Hartmut

Just a word of caution here Ken. Given the conversation I overheard with the
RTA on my issue, we cannot assume that the RTA records are good enough on
these old referrals to get a definitive answer. One option is to make a
"secret shopper" type call to them with an approval number and ask the
simple question on whether it is OK to register the camper

Good advice, thanks. So armed at least with a valid approval number when dealing with the RTA still has to be a whole lot better than no info/proof at all ... lambs to the slaughter comes to mind.

So yes, let's keep moving on establishing a record of approval numbers from each builder. If this exercise is productive, then I'd also like to see included a close-up pic of the official sticker from each builder showing "readable" numbers as well as a description of where to look for it

I had always believed that my Syncro was sold new with the Trakka conversion and I thought that I had some paperwork somewhere that confirmed that. 

Prompted by your suggestion that we try to collect all relevant information, I dug out the file – to find that there is absolutely NO mention of Trakka on the original registration certificate!  (See attached scan.)

Did the Trakka conversions have any form of compliance sticker and, if so, where?

Gleened from what Phill has said in the past, I can imagine the sequence probably goes something like this ...
 
Vehicle arrives in Australia and held in bond storage until VAG seeks release.
 
VAG seeks release, pays duty and compliance fees, compliance plate fitted, vehicle released to dealership.
 
Dealership releases vehicle to Trakka (unregistered) for a camper conversion, fix on dealer plates, drive away OR ... 
 
Customer seeks to buy stock vehicle from VAG dealer, pays all onroad costs including rego, drives away.
 
Private buyer or Trakka deliver vehicle to Trakka conversion facility and build campervan conversion.
 
Private buyer drives away campervan or Trakka registers it for a customer order, or it sits unregistered till a customer purchase.
 
As the vehicle was registered as per compliance plate only, then there can be no reference to a later conversion, either on the compliance plate nor Certificate of Registration. Conversion simply relied on RTA approved conversion builder permit.
 
So now, 20 years down the track for subsequent RTA verification of the legal status of a campervan ... what is left that will satisfy the RTA? Any of the following? ....
 
* customer pays all costs for RTA engineering/blue slip re-inspections. (No sweat for RTA, very inconvenient & costly for owner).
* owner produces original Trakka conversion documentation showing RTA issued Trakka conversion licence/permit. (Probably lost by now so unlikely). 
* owner shows RTA inspector the afixed Trakka conversion licence/permit sticker. (Probably lost by now so less likely).
* owner quotes "gleened" Trakka conversion licence/permit number over the phone or to RTA inspector. (Then hopes like hell this works).
 
Sadly, RTA reports back that records of licence/permits are now incomplete/missing/deleted. (Owner now tears out remaining locks of hair, forced to re-visit the above options).
 
Haha ......... who was it first said? .... let the buyer beware!
 
Lets continue looking for evidence please ok ...... the stickers or equivalent!! Anyone/everyone? TIA.

Hi Ken, My Camper is a SAFARI CAMPER  DISCOVERER  any good???    I cleaned the engine as  best as poss degreaser/high pressure gun on it for 10 mins. I turned the key and.......bingo it started, but poss no compression one cylinder. Will do a test asap, let you know. Bad news is, that Elke is back from NZ  by Wednesday, my hols are over mate, what now with all my projects ????? hartis

From the last plaque details one can see that the RTA has'nt got a bloody clue as to what these vehicles are all about.As you are well aware my vehicle is a GL MODEL,therefore it came into the country with 7 seats.To add salt into the wound they stuffed up on my VIN Number and the 9th position which is the letter M was stamped as the letter N.The original owner whom i bought the vehicle from wrote to the authorities and had this rectified after receiving an official letter from VW Australia to confirm that the letter was infact an M and not an N. 
I hope this information helps in the ongoing saga of the  NSW"Rip Off" .

This is very useful.  Is it possible for you to get a clear picture of the Trakka plate and a pic of its location?  Is it a sticker or a metal plate?  This will help give us a better record.

The 3 plates are Aluminium.I will try and get a photo tomorrow.The Trakka plate is just below the floor on the right side basically the step to get into the vehicle.
