FW: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Instruments

Peter,
Obviously by now you would have compared the functionality and aesthetics of your earlier type instrument cluster to the later type as in Hartmuts Tristar. In my view, no contest there at all, the later type wins hands down, especially the speedo in your case, not to mention the integrated tacho and digital clock. Ask Hartmut about the digital clock .. haha.

To change to the later cluster, not already having the later type klm only speedo is an additional but not insurmountable issue, need to track one down separately and then buy a complete late model cluster (87 or preferably later) from US ebay (as I did) or from The Samba US website. Some caution is necessary as quality varies from badly damaged or incomplete to near pristine and usually priced accordingly.

If you are interested to pursue this line of enquiry, then we could discuss this in greater detail at The Nationals.

Can you tell me the VIN number of this van please? This may provide a clue as to whether or not the present instrument cluster is the original one.

Cheers.
Ken

Hello Ken. Just back from a "shake down" camping trip in the Syncro to see
what work is required. The Suncamper set up is not too bad but needs a few
tweaks that I will get onto ASAP. The fridge worked really well on 12 and
240 v but there is not outlet on the side for gas exhaust like on my TRAKKA
T3. That is easily fixed though. The internal lights and water pumps work
off the car battery. There is an isolator switch. I will be installing a
second battery for this purpose as there is a danger the car battery could
go flat if one is not careful. I wonder if any other members have this
Suncamper conversion? I am going to convert internal lights to LEDs so this
will also help.

See you at the Nationals.

Re the VIN. It is WV2ZZZ25ZKG027315.

Cheers, Peter
Peter,
If it's a 3 way fridge then I suppose you need the venting to outside for the gas. If it's only a 12vdc/240vac fridge then no, don't vent it, you probably don't need it and as well, prevents dust getting into the van through the vent you might otherwise make.

I'm pretty peeved at the moment about the performance of LED lights as opposed to the wild claims made about their longevity, for example some claim up to 50,000 hours. Two of the three LED's in my $90 headlight failed just after the 12 month warranty ran out and as well but with very little use over say 2 years, a $20 x 6 LED replacement light that fits into the ceiling cabin light (we all have at least 2 of these) ... 3 of the 6 LEDs failed, making this light completely useless. I do like the idea of conserving power and gaining claimed longevity compared to the traditional filament festoon globes, but really, thumbs down at the moment.

You might want to swap instrument clusters while you have the chance.

Cheers.
Ken

Australia's #1 job site If It Exists, You'll Find it on SEEK

Thanks Ken. Yes it is a gas fridge as well so I don’t know why there is not a top vent. I have the NSW expert on caravan fridges living in my street and he thought it was very odd that there was no vent. Trakka put in one of those large rectangular ones that have the vent incorporated in the right hand side. I will do some more exploring.

Re LEDs. I think it’s the same old thing. You have got to pay for quality as there are so many about.

I have a family friend searching out the market for instruments in Germany.
