FW: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Re: Front diff mounts

Ben,
Deterioration of either/and/or front/rear drivetrain rubber mounts and perceived consequential effects has been the subject of debate on the US Syncro forum in the past.

Of note is the claim that deteriorated rubber mounts cause/contribute to the drivetrain vibration issue.

I vaguely recall also a suggestion at the time that it was worth a try turning the rubber mounts upside down. Obviously better still, R&R with new.
Cheers.
Ken

Ben,

See the attached pdf ETKA sketch and parts list.
The front diff uses 6 (3 pair) of these mounts ... called "bonded rubber mounting". ETKA position 6. Part no. 183 199 381 A

Had a good look at the mounts today.Whilst on the hoist,I could easily move the F/diff and there was a metalliac tap noise whist moving the diff by hand(up and down). There was also movement side to side.
I found that the locator, plastic??spacers, between mouled rubber bushes were not located.I put them back together properly and tightened the bolts. The diff was much more solid,no metallic tap,but still apears to be moving around.
The rubber moulded bushes appeared'squashed',and was soft to push the metal insert in the middle.I will replace them when I get some.
I have been trying to diagnose a very slight vibration and are ruling out possibilities before I replace my unis.I will not do the unis before I know the diff is not moving around.
I believe that I have now inherited a new Syncro fun job.My front CVs are clicking whilst I pull into my driveway.I know I should avoid tight turns. They also click in the sand as well on tight turns,I went out Boat Harbour today to test this.
Has anyone else experience this?

Ben,
Sounds like someone previous made a dogs breakfast of reinstalling the rubber mounts & associated parts.

I've since rechecked for side to side & up/down movement on mine, happy to report nil adverse movement. Interesting then mine has no propshaft vibration either, touch wood. Previous owners must have done something right!
Cheers.
Ken

Ken,Ive had those mounts out before, and had installed them correctly, the bolts were tight, but it seems the bushes or locators are had it.Part no 183 199 381 A is a moulded rubber bush, there is no mention of the locating spacers that lock in,between moulded bushes. The ETKA diagram doesnt show them either.
When you look under your bus, look at the washer below the moulded bush.Does this washer sit flush up under the bush.Mine there is a 3mm gap!

also Ken,the very slight vibration is there between60- 64 kms in AWD on the road.Offroad you would be hard to pick it.I dont often do that speed off-road either. If I put it in AWD on road,I switch the decoupler before/after that speed.I am looking into replacing the mounts still though.

Ben,

Hang about I'll take some photos of mine. I see the single front mount setup is different to the rear pair setup.

M8y, at this stage, my consultancy fee so far has already gone past the slab of beer cost ok.

Cheers.

Benny,
Looks like we have a deal. I'll teach you how to use your PC, you can attend to my syncro maintenance. I get the hard part of the deal I see .... dammit!

See the attached pics. If you are still having trouble seeing them, I'll file them in the syncro forum so you can view them there.

Seems ETKA doesn't show nor list some parts for the front diff rear mount assemblies i.e., missing mount parts are two for each x white plastic or nylon spacer discs 79mm dia x 11mm thick. They must all have a centre clearance hole to suit an M10 bolt.

For the rear mount, you can see there is the same gap showing as you say at the bottom of the bottom rubber mount yet in that same space for the top mount, there is located a large diameter steel washer. Whereas the large diameter washer at the bottom is below the level of that same space, meaning top and bottom steel washers must have different diameter centre holes.

For the front mount, now that's a bit hard to get a full pic of. The top part shown speaks for itself, but I must say I'm unclear about the bottom part. Suffice to say there is in place only a bottom rubber mount between the diff case flange and the main steel plate the whole thing fastens down to. The thing is, when looking at that bottom rubber mount, there doesn't show the gap that you speak of, which then suggests that gap part must fit into a recess shaping in the bottom support plate. Yet when you eyeball the underside of that same support plate, there is no recess (or on this side it should show as a bulge down) showing. Only way to tell what's going on is to dismantle it all and see what's what.

I'd be fairly confident my setup is correct because that is how Rudi reinstalled the front diff.

Hope this is clearer than mud.

Cheers.
Ken

Hallo Hartmut,
Öffnen Sie die blutunterlaufenen Augen und schauen näher.

Australia's #1 job site If It Exists, You'll Find it on SEEK

The only way Hart’s eyes would be bloodshot would be from staring at his computer screen as he doesn’t drink. Although owning a Syncro could turn a person to seek refuge in alcohol!!!!

Peter,
Bloodshot eyes happen as a consequence of being king-hit every morning since by his better half for his nefarious dealings while she was awol across the ditch.
