FW: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Shocks

All,
With the original length Syncro springs, the OME shocks to buy are N38S for the fronts, N37 for rears. Expect to pay $800 plus for the full set, usually from an ARB type store.

If you have/going to install longer springs, you most likely will need different model shocks that have longer travel.

Cheers.
Ken

Wonderful. Thank you Ken. We discovered mine has an extra shim above the
springs. Looks about 15 mm thick. I assume for some extra clearance. I will
check with ARB to see if that will make a difference to the type of shocks I
need.

Cheers, Peter
Peter,
The stock rear springs should abutt a stock thick pad in place at the top of the spring housing and a thin nylon pad at the bottom. This isn't an extension, this is normal.

Thanks for your help here Ken. Mine has the black nylon pads you mentioned
and then an extra one at the top. Someone has done a mod in the past for
some reason.

Cheers, Peter
Peter,
My best guess is that the extra pad recovers all/some of the lost underside ground clearance caused by the extra weight of the camper. I have that issue with my Syncro camper but so far, not tackled this issue.

You can buy these spacers from a few sources as a cheap way to gain a bit of lift, have a look at www.busman.be as he sells them

Gary,
Previous posters have suggested a suitable/cheap alternative is to make spacer disks from white kitchen cutting board material. Not sure if this works the same for the fronts. Anyone?

To R&R the front shocks, Yurik has previously described an alternate procedure that negates the need for spring compressors.

Hmm not sure, think i'd prefer the stretching springs option just in case of an insurance problem.

I'd like to read that process if Yurik has it somewhere. Hartmut explained it to me but i've yet to put it into practise.

Many thanks for OME references and suggestions. I noticed the Busstop are
selling what they call heavy duty oil shocks for the T3/T25. $134 each.
Brand is AL-KO from the photo on their website. Any opinions on these out in
Syncro land?

Cheers, Peter
Thanks to you both.

Group,I fitted a full set of OldManEmu shocks to my bus last year, after they were recomended to me by Phil.(have you fitted them yet?).After new shocks, new tyres and a f/r wheel allignment, the bus never felt better. On and off-road.
I would recomend them as a stock replacement part. They perform very well, and they look good.
Replacing the front shocks is tricky. The use of a good spring compressor is important. If you are not confident with this type of work, then find someone who is,you could do yourself some serious damage.

Two things ...

2. The axiom .... you get what you pay for.

Good luck.

Benny,
So I take it from your reply that you are dismissive of Yuriks alternate method that does not require the use of spring compressors?

Gary,

The procedure is described in the Files section in Syncro_T3_Austrlia as “Renewing front syncro shocks.doc” compiled and posted by Ken.

Ben, I broke 2 sets of compressors, ok they came from  SCA but, the problem is space and of that we have not enough. I  then used the hydr car jack method , found it MUCH safer and much easier.

But you are well advised to use a guide rod say 10mm dia and threaded , I think it is 8mm , but check, you screw this rod of approx  200mm length to the top of the shock  (through the shock mounting hole to guide the shoc end into it’s position. The rest is peanuts.    Hartis

Local ARB store very helpful. N38S $233. N37 $152. N38S in stock, N37 2 week
delay. Only issue now is to sort out whether the extra shims I have will
make a difference.

Cheers, Peter
Peter,
Those prices are exactly the same that I was quoted in December 2008. Probably means they are making such a killing, they might get embarrassed upping the prices.

If you want any comparative measurements between what you presently have installed and the OMEs, maybe for example the fully extended length of the rear shocks or anything else, I can easily check measure anything you may need on the workbench as my new OME set are not yet fitted. Let me know ok.

Cheers.
