FW: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Vehicle Inspection Nowra area???

Pete,
Sounds pretty dodgy. Avoid seam issues like the plague.
Do yourself a favour, better to wait patiently for a good one.
Ken.

Subject: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Vehicle Inspection Nowra area???

Hey Guys,
Is anyone in the Nowra NSW area as i am thinking of bying a syncro that is privatly advertised there. However i live in QLD and leaving the country Monday or early in the week to work in Saudi for 4wks The present owner does not know enough about syncros or maybe does and not telling. I would not blame anyone for issues that may arise if i were to go ahead and buy the vehicle however! I presently have a telstra syncro so i know what to expect etc. It sounds like the car may have some rust in the seams as it is a Tracker and i think the body flex and beach camping may have contributed to this. That is my main concern as the seams have rubber stick on trim that may hide or perhaps the trims could just be the answer to sealing the joints. So i know it is a big weekend for VW down there but maybe someone is close by who may be able to give me their opinion????
Regards Pete

Pete,

I think I may have found the for sale Nowra syncro in question. If so, the following comments may help or hinder:
The rubber stick on trims you speak of aren't where any seams are anyway so they are just aesthetic add-ons.

This syncro is one of those pretty rare early versions with round headlights and the spare wheel mounted inside at the back sidewall. Bit of a pain having it there really, I take it then there is no spare wheel provision underneath at the front for this '88? So sleeping 2 in the rear double bed ... bit of a bummer. Mr. Toyota says ... "oh so squeezy"?

It even has genuine front mudflaps ... I don't recall any syncros with these installed.

Looks like it may once have had a car bra installed.

Has power steering ... that's good. The air conditioner compressor is disconnected and doesn't appear to have an a/c outlet on the dash anyway ... mystery there.

Looks like 14" wheels so that is of some concern re tyre availability/selection.

The front seats look like basic VW original vinyl ... no Trakka upgrade so probably no seat swivel either.

Think it's got a pair of those Puch badges outside adjacent the front doors ..... cool dude eh.

If the fridge motor is noisy, sounds like the compressor is just about to kark it, I had one and happened to me a while back. I had my fridge overhauled ... new compressor, new controller, new door seals, new thermostat switch, added direct 240vac controller, some wiring mods, fuses, re-gassed ... about $1200 though all up, but it is specialist work. Much better setup now.

The typical question that often remains unanswered during a sale is ... does the VC work properly? Hard to know on the spot unless he is willing to take it somewhere offroad or onto a beach to demo it to you. You don't want 2 syncros with dead VC's eh.

No syncro badge on rear door.

I see it mentions other items of interest which might justify the asking price ... ideally they would be checked for wear, given the high cost of upgrade should failure happen any time soon.

Has the owner documented full service history to peruse?

At first blush ... vehicle looks in good nic. Unfortunately, photos never tell the real story.

Everything else ..... well someone needs to eyeball it and test it.

Cheers.

Ken

View photos of singles in your area! Looking for a date?
Hey Guys,
Well thanks all for the input and special thanks to Ralph for puting me in touch with Dave who inspected the vehicle within 24 hrs and gave me a very good detailed account of the issues. Wow what a resourse this site is for us poor VW syncro nuts. Just the fact that he was able to tell me that the car was not a dual diff lock as advertised and had some other not so imprtant cosmetic faults made it easy for me to keep looking for that car that is just right for me. Have you changed your will yet Ken? Anyway if anyone knows of a good pop top Syncro camper for a reasonable price let me know.
Kind regards to all Pete
