FW: Tristar Visit

Whilst this is a private correspondence between Joachim and Peter, I am posting it on to the group because the origins of the contact with Joachim date from before I set up the Syncro_T3_Australia group in mid 2004.  Joachim was accorded honorary Australian Syncronaut status and became a foundation member of the web group..

Hello Peter,

Good to hear from you!

Thanks as well for the offer of tethering when I need the internet for my blog. I will have a lot of writing to do no doubt!!!

You're welcome Peter. When I was travelling OZ in the Syncro in 2004, I was lucky to meet some of the Australien Syncronauts in person. For example, we (my ex-wife and me) met Brian Reed (where we stayed for some days), Les (where we also stayed for some days and spent some time together), Phill & Joanne Lander (same as Les), Bruce of QLD (we met for a dinner) and the guys around Ken Tyler/WA (who are not or not more on the list and with whom we spent quite some time in the woods and the dunes). They were all very nice and helpful people, so I'm just trying to give something back.

Blogs didn't exist for me in 2004, but we were having a website back then, which we updated regularly using internet cafes along the way. Unfortunately, the site isn't online anymore, but the pictures of the tour still exist. Will bring them to Berlin /the Germany Roundtrip...

I arrive in Berlin on Thursday morning 13 August 2015 to meet up with Hart who will have driven the Tristar down from Hamburg .

Very good. Fingers crossed, everything turns out as planned. We (girlfriend and her daugther) intend to be arriving some time in the afternoon on the 13 August as well.

Regards,

Joachim

Hi Guys,

I remember it well when Joachim was here. I was at Apollo Bay market in my previous Syncro, when I saw another Syncro drive past (rare in itself). It looked interesting and I looked again, and saw that it stood fairly tall (turned out to be a 16"), and had a Westfalia type roof (also rare here). Then I saw LHD and German plates, so of course I jumped in the van and followed them back to their camp site. Later, we ended up having what was probably the first Syncro gathering in Australia (4 or 5 vans if I remember; who else was there?) near Noojee on a very wet weekend.

regards,

Brian Reed.

(still lurking, read most posts but don't post much these days. Now retired with my T5 in Mallacoota.

Brian is right here. I remember we did a short fire trail on the Great Ocean Road together before the Noojee weekend. Short but quite steep and slippery.

The Noojee weekend... that must have been you Brian, Les, Stuart (?) and Steven with his family (?)... anybody else?

Back then, the Syncro was 16", but it's not an original 16". Before travelling to OZ, I had lifted this ex-police vehicle by using Seikel springs in connection with EMU shockers and 16" (T4) wheels (which I still use today). I had also converted the interior to a very basic camping setup together with my dad. Back in Germany from late 2004, the vehicle was taken off the road, as the exhaust had completely gone and other rust was setting in that could not be treated appropriately at this time. Since 2011, a very long and tedious second conversion has been going on. It was stripped, the rust was treated, it was repainted and the interior re-done. This time, all a bit more professionally. I know this must sound crazy, but after travelling with it for such a long time I have fallen in love with the Syncro and although I still have do deal with nerve-wracking issues since starting the second conversion, I look forward to the next big trip to Syncro 30 in Berlin and the Germany Roundtrip, followed by Busfest in the UK.

(still lurking, too. Now self-employed and doing a part-time job at the same time. Also been refurbishing a house for the last two years, so still enjoy following the list, but not much time to post a lot left. Nevertheless, always willing to help if I can, maybe better to contact me direct then.)

Wow, what a coincidence! I thought this Syncro looked familiar, and the dates and descriptions added up. We were travelling around Oz at the same time (in out T2 bus), and we happened to camp next to you in northern WA (I think near Fitzroy crossing some where), would have been june/july 2004. Great to hear after all this time you had a good trip and got home OK.

Unbelievable! When reading your post, I was thinking about the red T2 we meet up North immediately. Must have been the caravan park in Halls Creek where we met back then. We were just coming out of the Tanami Road and were going on to explore North-West WA afterwards. I remember staying there just for one night.

Have just been registering on Aussieveedubbers and can't see your/our picture(s) yet, but look forward to reading your full story very soon! Also happy to hear it all went well for you, too.

That sounds right!

We had just been on the Gibb River road and were on our way up to Kununurra. Yes that is our poor over loaded T2 (nick name Andy). We still have Andy and only recently (~2 years ago) stopped driving it daily and swapped over to the Syncro (Caravelle). It was a great trip, and something we would love to do again.

The report on Aussieveedubbers was only sporadic, but gives you some details on where we went.

One funny story we have from the drive on the Gibb River road, a Dutch family had broken down there, they were very unprepared in a standard car (ford falcon). We towed them ~50-100km back to a main road so they could organise a tow truck from Derby to help them. They were a nice family, but lucky we could help them or they would have been stranded. Not a bad effort for the kombi which had a stock engine (2L)

Good to hear from you Joachim. Hope you enjoy the Syncro 30
