Fwd: Mefro rims: group buy from Australia

Hi all (or rim buyers specifically),

This is my latest communication from Syncro Services regarding shipping costs. I sincerely hope he is able to swing the cheaper quote. Fingers crossed.

Regards,

Francesca.

Hi Francesca,

I received the second shipping offer today and it seems to be a really great offer - but there´s a problem: We need a taxnumber which we haven´t yet. we have to apply for it at the taxoffice but not on friday,as they are closed. So I don´t know IF and HOW we can apply for that tax number and IF and WHAt it will cost....

The offer for sea freight would be for 37 rims about 400,00 € excl. insurance. Insurance would cost approx. 85,00 € extra as well as the costs that have to be paid in Melbourne (taxes, handling charges). Shipping the rims over would take minimum 6 weeks, more detailed informations maybe provided when it comes more concrete.

Shipping with our shipping agent would cost about 1.250,00 €, costs in Melbourne excluded, as like in the first offer. That seems to be pretty expensive and I would prefer the other shipping option, but pricing is still a bit vague.

Unfortunately I can´t come up with a more precise offer at this moment, but maybe these informations can be a beginning....

Hello again,

I have had responses from a number of people in the Syncro community here. So far we have 7 people definitely interested in sets of 5X15" wheels. We have one person also interested in 2X16" wheels. In addition we have 5 people interested in fastener sets. One person would also like 1 each hand brake cable, right and left, for a 14" Syncro.

Is it possible on the basis of this for you to make enquiries about quotes on shipping? I would like to get back to the group by the end of the week, if possible, to let them know what the cost inclusive of shipping will be. The shipping quote would need to allow for delivery to an address in Melbourne. We will also have to allow for paying duty and clearance through customs.

Regards,

Francesca.

Hi guys,
just thought I might add my 20cents worth of info on this subject.I was speaking to a mate of mine who works in the air freight/customs clearance industry on the topic of this group buy from Germany. He seems to think that the shipping costs were reasonable and made the point that handling and clearing charges at this end should total somwhere around the $1000 mark (could be a little more for loose cargo ie-not in a container). He also pointed out that import duty of 10% of the cost of goods plus the freight would be payable and on top of that a further 10% gst. This is because Aust customs sees this as a commercial shipment. Just wanted to make that point, so that there are no surprises when you're slapped with these taxes.Hope it all goes well for you ,cheers Eddie.

Hi Guys,

If possible I would like to withdraw from my anticipated purchase of a set of 5 wheels as in addition to extra costs involved in transporting them from Melbourne to me here in Denmark WA, the extra costs shown below make the deal look not so good.
Hope this message is not too late, and good luck with the deal.

Regards

Hi Tony. Yes, that's OK obviously. The tyranny of distance does get in the way for you WAers. If anybody else feels similarly please just let me know ASAP. Cheers, Francesca.

Hi there,

I'm not sure whether my reply came through to the group (experimenting with my new phone). I let Tony know that that's OK obviously, and understandable from his WA perspective. I also added that if anyone else feels the same way, could they please just let me know ASAP.

Cheers,

Francesca.

Hello Francesca.

I know I have put my name down for a set of 15" wheels. Maybe I missed some correspondence but I have no idea what the final price was agreed upon for a set of 5 for pickup from Richmond Vic as well as a price per individual wheel just in case i need to reconsider, be much appreciated.

Michael

Hi Michael,

No final price per wheel has yet been determined, and can't be until Syncro Services lets me know what the best deal on shipping that they can arrange is. I forwarded to everyone their latest communication regarding the quotes they have in the pipeline and I am hoping to hear back from them soon.

I also sent out to everyone earlier the Syncro Services prices on 15" and 16" wheels. These were on a sliding scale depending on what quantity we order: more rims, cheaper price per rim.

Let me know if you missed out on either of these two emails for some reason. To these costs we also have to add handling and clearing charges, duty and GST. So, that's as precise as I can be at this stage, and people will have to make up their own minds about whether they think it's worth it for them. As more information comes to light, I will pass it on.

Cheers,

Francesca.

Hi Francesca, just as another option I thought I should check out a lead Eddie Bergodaz mentioned when we met in the park.

I briefly spoke to someone at Canterbury Wheels last week who said that they could supply load rated alloy wheels to suit our vehicles. He wanted me to go down and have look but i'm just too flat out at the moment.

I'm still keen on the group buy steels but thought i'd throw this into the mix just in case it is a cheaper option.

Cheers,

Hi there,

I'm not sure whether my reply came through to the group (experimenting with my new phone). I let Tony know that that's OK obviously, and understandable from his WA perspective. I also added that if anyone else feels the same way, could they please just let me know ASAP.

Cheers,

Francesca.

Thanks a lot, Eddie. It's useful to have that inside information.

Hi guys,
just thought I might add my 20cents worth of info on this subject.I was speaking to a mate of mine who works in the air freight/customs clearance industry on the topic of this group buy from Germany.

Gary, Francesca,

I went to Canterbury Wheels today, not much joy. All what they had to offer was
ROH Alloy Wheels 15 x 7 with 40mm off set for about
$190 but not on the shelf, and
Steel Wheels 15 x 7 with 12mm positive off set ( but very
heavy) with a Ford hole pattern needs redrilling for about $105.

On the way home I came across a Kombi with "Performance" Alloy Wheels
15 x 6.5 load rating 875kg shoed with
GF Goodrich All Terrain Tyres.
The owner told me he bought the set up 8 years ago in QLD. Any one
out there knows this brand?

Cheers
Theo
Hi Gary and Theo,

Thanks for your thoughts and work in checking out Canterbury Wheels. It certainly would be handy if there was an obvious local option.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Syncro Services with a final quote on the shipping. Will chase it up today.

Francesca.

PS Gary, I spied you driving down Holden St the other day. I didn't notice a plume of black smoke in your wake. I hope that means you've sorted your diesel pump woes.

That's great Theo, thanks for checking it out. Looks like we can rule that out as an option.

Hi Francesca, yes glad Theo was able to check it out in person.

Yes, probably was me, my beast is finally going again with a new pump. It is transformed, more power, no smoke, i'm really pleased.

Cost too much though but really down to my poor decision making. It would have been cheaper to buy a brand new pump from Europe at the start and get that fitted rather than spend too many man hours trying to setup the old one and then stripping it for a rebuild. I'd ruled out everything else so had to be the pump. You live and learn.

According to the diesel guru who did the work the quality of Australian diesel is very poor and not stored correctly so it absorbs water. My pump had lots of damage caused by water in the fuel. He runs extra filtration on his own vehicles.

Eddie, thanks for that, now I would like to know
was it a worthwhile improvement? 16" wow! Did you
do something to your gear box? How did the
Syncro handle the bigger tyres?

The tyres I put on are the biggest I could fit within the confines of the rear trailing arms and yes ,with standard gearing, it did struggle at highway speeds.Luckily my diff broke and I fixed it along with shorter 3rd & 4th gears. This combo of tyres and gears is the best thing I've ever done to the bus.Having said all that you can get smaller tyres with a lower profile on the 16's so that your gearing is not affected.I think Roger Bell has this set up on his.Hope this answers your question , cheers Eddie.

That's right - find the gap between 2 and 3rd much more acceptable now and been having great(safe) fun in the recent Melbourne wet. There's no doubt though when the going gets tough rugged high profile tyres are better but I find mine a good compromise and carry a set of chains in case of need, (Have found rear diff lock sufficient to date.)
