Phill has covered this before, he can probably confirm G11 and G12+ are compatible.
Reading the following forum topic seems to confirm it also, any incompatibility appears to be only between G11 and G12.
Goto: http://forums.kombiclub.com/showthread.php?t=20322
There also seems to be recent mention of a replacement for G12+ ... by G12++. Compatible anyone? Colour? Shelf life?
Bit like a merry-go-round eh.
Cheers.

Try calling VW Australia. Don't trust what you hear from the local grease monkies.

Being a newcomer, you didn't know about G11V8 and G11V8II did you?

It's a moot point, the need or not to know the myriad attributes/mixability of VW coolant ....
especially whilst driving in the distant past either a 1.6 or 2.0 litre Bay!!
No worries!!

I dare not write this for the responses I am sure I am about to read.
Following advice from a local grease monkey, I have been using Nulon Red for a few years now. http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Red_Long_Life_Concentrated_Coolant/
My poor van came with rusty fluro green coolant. I didn't know the implications of said coolant at the time. Yes I've had to replace leaky radiator and a bunch of coolant pipes (including the go-westy fix on the long long pipes), but I put this down to age and past poor upkeep.
For a bit of a read regards coolants, there is this interesting link

PS Gearbox finally gone now. New clutch and cv joints made a difference for a few months, and was what previously prevented shifting and made noise, but yep, definitely gearbox this time. Looking at getting one from the UK unless anyone has a better more cost effective lead. Hopefully will be able to get a locker, so some positives from this. Any tips on good shipping service also appreciated.

Like you, I also discovered my van had green coolant (definitely not blue/green colour of G11) when I first bought it, so quickly chose VAG approved G12+. I'm curious then why it was you didn't simply transition to G12+ also, especially as this topic and warnings has had a fair old workover during the past few years on this and other forums. Was the Nulon cheaper or some other reason?
Good luck with an exchange gearbox from OS. Others here know more about this issue, but do your research first and be sure the replacement gearbox has a crownwheel and pinion gear ratio that matches the CW&P gear ratio in your existing front diff. In your case, I'm uncertain whether you are running an Australian or American import gearbox and front diff, given your Westfalia import connections, hence my reason for drawing this to your attention.
Sam, I'm sure all of us would like to see you at the Nationals in Sydney in late May, even without the syncro ok. Any chance?
Cheers.

With all the latest places, searching has never been easier. Looking for a new home?
Yep, it's in the diary, so hopefully I should make it this year. Sorry been a bit busy, did the conversation on a NSW meet-up get anywhere, apart from the nationals? Once I am back on the road would love to do another weekend away somewhere not too far away :)
Yes the Nulon was cheaper and more importantly easier to access at the time when I needed to get things done, and a 'VW specialist' told me it would be fine. .... But isn't there something to do with the particular head gasket materials?
Yes know all about the need to get matching ratios for front and rear diff. It would seem I am better off importing a gearbox/diff from overseas than sourcing one locally.

Was the Nulon cheaper or some other reason?

Others here know more about this issue, but do your research first and be sure the replacement gearbox has a crownwheel and pinion gear ratio that matches the CW&P gear ratio in your existing front diff. In your case, I'm uncertain whether you are running an Australian or American import gearbox and front diff, given your Westfalia import connections, hence my reason for drawing this to your attention.

Looking at getting one from the UK unless anyone has a better more cost effective lead. Hopefully will be able to get a locker, so some positives from this. Any tips on good shipping service also appreciated.

Good to hear back from you.
The Sydney Nationals in May seems to be the only confirmed Sydney region syncro meet that I'm aware of. Be a great opportunity to get together and have a tipple re syncro 25th anniversary celebs etc etc. Maybe the topic of a weekend camping trip could be discussed there on the day.
For me, changing to G12+ was a logical move and provided me the opportunity to at least cross off this item from the "to do" list at the time and move on. Navel gazing about coolant proerties or alternatives ..... nah ... don't want to know .. sorry.
Remember if you buy a locking diff, you'll need the complete wiring, vacuum and electrical kit as well to use it, maybe your OS supplier can help with assembling together all those secondhand components as well. After that, then you can add a decoupler and after that you can buy a solid shaft if your VC is cactus ... and so on and so forth. Oh dear, go visit your bank manager again!
Cheers.
