G12 Coolant

Phill,

Better explain the difference.  I wouldn't know without looking it up and it is probably something that we all should know.

I hope that you mean G12+ and not G12.

Make sure that you use with distilled or demineralised water.

I thought that everyone knew about it.

G12 is not suitable for T25 engines. G11 and G12 were sold at the same time. G12+ is the replacement for both.

Phill,

Since I got the Syncro, I have been using what Volkspower specified as the right coolant without taking too much further notice.  I knew that there was some part number confusion in the earlier coolants, with the same part number being used for two different colours at an early stage, and even more confusion about compatibility.  I have heard of users being given incompatible coolant by VW dealers.  Even the colour of the several coolants gets different names - blue, green, red, pink, violet, purple, etc.  This is further exacerbated by the fact that there is a number of manufacturers making coolant for the Audi/VW market and also for the BMW market, which uses similar specs to Audi/VW.  This doesn't help the average owner one little bit!

When everything was out of my Syncro recently, I asked for all fluids to be changed.  The new coolant is now violet and is marked 12+.  My basic understanding was that the two prior coolants (pick a colour) were incompatible with each other but the 12+ is backward compatible with both.

If you have a reliable description of the three - G11, G12 and G12+ - I would be very interested to read it and it would be valuable information for all Syncro owners.

.

Gday Les and ALL,

Thanks for your thoughts on this topic. If what Phill has clarified is
correct, I don't recall it being differentiated in this way before so
Phills clarification can only be very helpful to us all.

I've always been unclear on the plethora of different coloured coolants
discussed here and elsewhere and the possibility of their use by owners
and/or "authorised" VW service agents.

In particular, alarm bells rang for me when I first bought my syncro and
discovered that my coolant system was sporting green coloured coolant
and had been serviced by an authorised VW service agent in Sydney for at
least the previous 5 years. I had the impression, rightly or wrongly,
that there was NO VW approved GREEN coolant for the T3 WBX motor. Idea
being, having no approved green coolant, this helped differentiate VW
coolants from other coolants commonly available at Auto Parts stores.

Maybe Phill can confirm the existence or not of a past/present approved
WBX 2.1 motor GREEN coolant and put this issue to rest.

Bottom line is, this issue becomes a non-issue if everyone simply uses
G12+ in their WBX 2.1 motor, or in the case of my local service agent,
in house, they've chosen to simply call it G13. Makes sense to me to.
The next version should be G14.

Cheers.

Ken

G10 was used with the early Golfs/Passats (could have been green) 2 year lifespan.

G11 for use in 1980s and early 90s vehicles including WBX. Blue colour and permanent.
G11A, G11B and G11V8 were replacements. (suitable for WBX)

G12 was for VW/Audi cars except WBX. Should not be mixed with G10 or G11. (pink clolour)

G12+ is the replacement for all coolants. Violet colour.

I hope that clears it up.
