gear box repairs

Bob,

The syncro mate actually noted they no longer work on T3's full stop.

I am amazed that they will work on a gearbox if they wont touch the rest.

Anyway I would still recommend Rudi from my previous experience - all others I have tried have given me problems...

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Bob,

I have a syncro mate from the South Coast NSW who needs his front wheel bearings done and he contacted Dunhams to be told that they no longer repair syncros?

Might be worth a call before you head there.

Cheers,

Hi Scott,

All I can say is I am sorry that you had such a bad experience. I feel bad since I introduced Ron to the group in good faith. I will be seeing him shortly and will speak to him about these issues but I would say the damage has been done,

Neil.

Neil,

Before going to Ron, I had heard nothing but good about him.

My gearbox parts were all Weddle gears or original gears - nothing from Albins.

It wasnt a gear issue this time but syncros and bearings - 1 of which he replaced failed severely and destroyed the housing. Two other bearings also failed to a lesser extent.

The gearbox leaked badly from day 1 due to poor seals and gaskets and was very noisy - due to the dodgy bearings.

I spoke to Ron about it and he started blaming everything else - not impressed.

Anyway he was a lovely bloke until after I picked up the gearbox - but one thing should have warned me there was something wrong when I picked it up - the selector was on upside down - an easy fix but I started getting nervous from there - with good reason I since found.

Then Peter from Port had a massive problem with the gearbox built by Ronnie and we both had to have Rudi sort them out.

Anyway, you live and learn.

I know who I will be going to from now on.

But if you are happy with Ronnie - I wont stop you.

Cheers,

Skot

I don't know the details of the problems you experienced but I know Ron uses Albins gears and they can be noisy, I don't think Rudi uses anything but genuine if he can and he has good access to genuine parts.
As far as I know Ron and Rudi are the only ones in the country that use the factory diff set up jigs so not sure how the others are doing it??
I also know Rudi well and regard him very highly. His reputation is second to none. He has helped me with my gearboxes sourcing parts and also advice but hasn't actually built one for me yet as I always seem to need custom work.
Ron has built me a gearbox so amazing that I am getting him to build me a spare as it has now been 7 years and I am paranoid that if anything ever wears out on it I won't be able to replace it.

Bob and Neil,

I was very disappointed with the job done at Racetrans.

The gearbox was noisy and leaked from day 1 and got worse to the point where I needed Rudi to fix it properly.

Now not noisy and no leaks.

Very happy with Rudi's work. Due to some dodgy bearings I had in my box - damage was done to the low gear housing so Rudi had to replace that too (not easy to find).

peter from Port had a similar problem with Racetrans just before me.

Anyway I would highly recommend you go to Rudi.

Cheers,

Contacted Racetrans in Kempsey sounds like he knows what he is about, long drive, but shorter than Bribie Island.
Any information appreciated.
I talked to Bug wreckers 95341077 in Sydney he has stripped down Syncro boxes and parts in his shop so if you need parts he might be worth a phone call.

I am somewhat concerned re the apparently difficulty in finding someone to repair a Syncro gearbox.
Are they actually that difficult to repair that good gearbox repairer is unable to do the job?  Are the specialised tools mentioned actually required? As I know with other specialised tools these are for mechanics convenience more than a requirement or in some cases easily fabricated.
I have a guy in mind in Canberra that has done plenty of work for me over the years,  I will call him today (If I remember) to get his opinion.   I am just not convinced that there are only a handful of people qualified to work on these…
How about rather than have mechanics individually mentioned in this thread, the moderator could get a sticky titled “Gearbox Repairers” and even client reviews Posted in this forum, hey even encourage them to join the forum.
I just have a feeling that one day my gearbox will go “poof” and I would love to be able to just box the bastard up and ship it off knowing it will come back to me like brand new.   Hopefully I can find someone in Canberra that could do the work quickly.  :)

There's no difficulty at all.

Take the advice of long time members here who know best from experience and have reported back here, but seems to be falling on deaf ears.

Take or send the tranny to Rudi.

Anyone else and it's experimental ... caveat emptor.

Ken

Dear All,

Have mentioned Michael Newton before.
Have just checked with him, and he is willing to help.

Michael was used greatly by the distributors when Syncros first came onto the market.
He has the tools, he has the knowledge, he has the experience,
the only thing he may not have, given the manufacturer’s level of support, is the parts.

Michael Newton Automotive
1/13 Aspinal Place
MULGRAVE, 2765, NSW.

Tel: 4577 9166

Mulgrave is a suburb in western Sydney,
Next to McGrath’s Hill and near Windsor.

Michael is a specialist Porsche mechanic,
with Porsche racing owners as his primary customers.
Some of whom pay lots for his time, so he spends a lot of time with them at the track.
So we need to respect that there are times when he is very busy.

He has had my gearbox on his bench at least twice over the years,
and he fitted me out with a front diff lock.
I should describe him as an engineer, not as a mechanic.

Hope this helps,
Peter

Hi richo1166.

If and when the time comes, I will be taking my Syncro to my mechanic/engineer to repair the gear box. 10 min from me in Lilydale, Victoria. He said he will be able to do the necessary repairs.

Gerald
Rudi is a career specialist 094 syncro gearbox builder and repairer, fully trained and employed by VAG in Germany on 094 gearbox before emigrating to Australia and has continued this specialty ever since as his principle vocation.
He is the complete package one stop shop  in Australia for all things 094 syncro transmission ... lifetime experience VAG qualified 094 builder, rebuilder, specialised tools, parts sourcer, extremely wise advice giver, and a very nice, amenable guy to boot.
Rudi's nickname should be Dr. 094. He can diagnose 094 faults with you over the phone.
I've yet to learn of any equivalent or better complete package 094 expert in Australia. I believe there is none.

Hey guys.

So how does this work? You call Rudi to let him know your intentions, he gives the estimate quote, then send him the gearbox, he does his magic and sends it back? How long does it take for a rebuild?

I will be needing gearbox mechanic services in the next couple of months - I have 091 gearbox on mine without diff lock. I will have all the required parts including the 094 case in a few weeks time. So will need to swap gearbox internals from my current case to a 094 case and add diff lock parts... At the moment, I have no issues with gearbox whatsoever, so don't really need a rebuild, but a good inspection of parts in case any are showing wear so might be better to renew. I do have intermittent issues with 6 months old clutch though (when on rough terrain pedal sometimes gets hard and doesn't disengage the clutch - the latest suggestion was, that maybe the seal wasn't renewed and the oil is getting into the clutch, that can cause it to stick sometimes??) - so this needs attention as well, when the gearbox is off...

I'm in Sunshine Coast, so taking the van to Bribie is not an issue...

I've heard some good things about Dave Butler on Gold Coast, that might do it as well...

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Beau
Lucky you being right in his backyard.
Simple answer is my best advice ...
Ring him in the pm. Too easy.

Cheers

Beau,

You are better off just sending Rudi your gearbox.

You can never fully tell what is totally wrong with your gearbox until it is stripped down.

Loose damaged parts can damage other parts and it takes a trained eye to see what is actually damaged and that cant be seen from the outside.

Once Rudi has your gearbox apart he will call and run through the problems and advise a likely cost.

Cheers,

Skot

Ring him in the pm. Too easy.

Thanks Skot.

But as I said, there is nothing wrong with my gearbox - I'll be swapping cases (091 to 094) and adding diff lock...that's it.
Might be easier to just drive the van there...

Cheers
Exactly.

But Rudi sets up the pre-load on the diff bearings as well. You should get him to do it rather than some random mechanic. There are tools those mechanics wont have. Worth checking over your gearbox while you are at it anyway.

Skot

Michael Newton Automotive at South Windsor. Absolutley outstanding, however, it may be difficult to convince him these days to do it but worth a try.

For background, Michael was the race mechanic for the 2 x Syncros on the Wynn's Around Australia rally.

These days he is almost exclusively involved in engine and gearbox preparation for Porsche in the Cup series.

Any information appreciated.

All,

I am in the middle of rebuilding and sourcing parts for my gearbox and hence created a list of parts I require. It has part numbers and references sources with recent (April 2017) pricing and availability. I only found 2 sources worth considering for internal gearbox parts - Weddle Industries in the US rand Bernd Jaeger in Germany.

Between the two you should find all parts needed (at least I did). I noticed that cost differs between the two suppliers for the same parts, you can save some money by ordering according to lower price (if you are happy with the brand/quality offered for the cheaper product).
Hope the attached spreadsheet will be of some help to anyone rebuilding the gearbox. Please note that the list may not be complete, 100% accurate nor does it include the front diff, however I found it useful in it's current state. Any feedback welcome.

NB: I will get my gearbox done by Bob Johanson from Volkscare in Adelaide.

Cheers

Hans
