gear box repairs

It had to happen 3rd and 4th gear has started to make noises who would you recommend for repairs in Sydney, Paul and Steve Muller no longer do them, i have talked to Dunhams in Wollongong they do any history about this company?
Contacted Racetrans in Kempsey sounds like he knows what he is about, long drive, but shorter than Bribie Island.
Any information appreciated.
I talked to Bug wreckers 95341077 in Sydney he has stripped down Syncro boxes and parts in his shop so if you need parts he might be worth a phone call.
Regards
Robert Dale
You wont be disappointed with Racetrans in Kempsey, I will be going up to see him on a weekend soon so could deliver your box if that would help,

Neil.

Bob and Neil,

I was very disappointed with the job done at Racetrans.

The gearbox was noisy and leaked from day 1 and got worse to the point where I needed Rudi to fix it properly.

Now not noisy and no leaks.

Very happy with Rudi's work. Due to some dodgy bearings I had in my box - damage was done to the low gear housing so Rudi had to replace that too (not easy to find).

peter from Port had a similar problem with Racetrans just before me.

Anyway I would highly recommend you go to Rudi.

Cheers,

Skot

I am happy so far with my Racetrans rebuild by Ron Schmidt. Although the case does seep slightly. Would have been nice if it didn't. Also he didn't replace or offer to replace any syncros. Apparently they are reasonable cheap and worth doing while the box is apart. Cheers Paul

Yep .... definitely Rudi. If it needs doing, do it properly. Anyone else you are taking a bit of a punt.

Is there a shipping box still doing the rounds somewhere?

Ken,

From me it went to Canberra. From there I know not.

It wasnt a piece of magic - it could be easily replicated but the use of some old unwanted sheet timber - plywood or melamine.

Only cost me $70 to ship my gearbox to Bribie island from Central Coast Ego depot.

Very cheap!

Cheers,

Skot

Michael Newton Automotive at South Windsor. Absolutley outstanding, however, it may be difficult to convince him these days to do it but worth a try.

For background, Michael was the race mechanic for the 2 x Syncros on the Wynn's Around Australia rally.

These days he is almost exclusively involved in engine and gearbox preparation for Porsche in the Cup series.

Hi Scott,

I had no idea people were unsatisfied with Ron's work.  I am disappointed to hear it.  I wonder if he knows?  I find it hard to believe that anyone could be unsatisfied with his work, he is so obliging and open to ideas and challenging mods.  I don't know the details of the problems you experienced but I know Ron uses Albins gears and they can be noisy, I don't think Rudi uses anything but genuine if he can and he has good access to genuine parts.
As far as I know Ron and Rudi are the only ones in the country that use the factory diff set up jigs so not sure how the others are doing it??
I also know Rudi well and regard him very highly.  His reputation is second to none.  He has helped me with my gearboxes sourcing parts and also advice but hasn't actually built one for me yet as I always seem to need custom work.
Ron has built me a gearbox so amazing that I am getting him to build me a spare as it has now been 7 years and I am paranoid that if anything ever wears out on it I won't be able to replace it.

Neil.

Neil,

Before going to Ron, I had heard nothing but good about him.

My gearbox parts were all Weddle gears or original gears - nothing from Albins.

It wasnt a gear issue this time but syncros and bearings - 1 of which he replaced failed severely and destroyed the housing. Two other bearings also failed to a lesser extent.

The gearbox leaked badly from day 1 due to poor seals and gaskets and was very noisy - due to the dodgy bearings.

I spoke to Ron about it and he started blaming everything else - not impressed.

Anyway he was a lovely bloke until after I picked up the gearbox - but one thing should have warned me there was something wrong when I picked it up - the selector was on upside down - an easy fix but I started getting nervous from there - with good reason I since found.

Then Peter from Port had a massive problem with the gearbox built by Ronnie and we both had to have Rudi sort them out.

Anyway, you live and learn.

I know who I will be going to from now on.

But if you are happy with Ronnie - I wont stop you.

Cheers,

Skot

Many thanks to contributors on this topic.

So in the interest of balanced reporting, given what's been stated here and to assist our members decision making concerning 094 transmission rebuilds, just wondering then if there are those here who can share their experiences as well of defective tranny work done in the past by Rudi and so had to resort to remediation/rectification work elsewhere and by whom?

I for one am unaware of it but would like to be better informed, if there is a problem in this regard. Anyone? TIA.
Cheers.
Ken

Hi Scott,

All I can say is I am sorry that you had such a bad experience.  I feel bad since I introduced Ron to the group in good faith.  I will be seeing him shortly and will speak to him about these issues but I would say the damage has been done,

Cheers,

Skot

Bob and Neil,

I was very disappointed with the job done at Racetrans.

The gearbox was noisy and leaked from day 1 and got worse to the point where I needed Rudi to fix it properly.

Now not noisy and no leaks.

Very happy with Rudi's work. Due to some dodgy bearings I had in my box - damage was done to the low gear housing so Rudi had to replace that too (not easy to find).

peter from Port had a similar problem with Racetrans just before me.

Anyway I would highly recommend you go to Rudi.

Cheers,

Skot

Contacted Racetrans in Kempsey sounds like he knows what he is about, long drive, but shorter than Bribie Island.
Any information appreciated.
I talked to Bug wreckers 95341077 in Sydney he has stripped down Syncro boxes and parts in his shop so if you need parts he might be worth a phone call.

Hi all;
Talked to Paul Muller regarding gear box repairs he recommended Michael Schymitze who has 35 years experience in rebuilding gear boxes, he is at Dunham autos Wollongong, they will only work on the gearbox out of the vehicle and it is up to the owner to chase up parts I still have to contact Rudi and have a talk to him, there is a mechanic in Canberra who  purchased Pauls equipment he had to do the gear boxes but his comment was that he wants to get rich quickly, he highly recommended Rudi saying that he is a very intelligent man with a good contact for spare parts it is interesting what you find out with a bit looking around. Hi Scott,

All I can say is I am sorry that you had such a bad experience.  I feel bad since I introduced Ron to the group in good faith.  I will be seeing him shortly and will speak to him about these issues but I would say the damage has been done,

Hi all
have been on this forum for a while but dont reply to often  .I assume i am  the get rich guy refered to in canberra .I have operated the same business "Volksparts" in the ACT area since 1979 except for a stint from 1996 to 2000 when it was owned & operated by a small time crook whom bankrupted it .It is a family business & has always had several employees .
I have a passion for T3s & syncros .I have the factory tools to repair all vw gearboxes into the late 90s .I recently purchased a large quantity of T3 gearbox parts to suit syncros & T3s .There was no equipment purchased just parts .Unfortunately a large percentage of the gearbox parts where SH parts salvaged from warranty claims from a dealership in the 90s & upon inspection are damaged or unusable  .Part of this purchase was never delivered  due to a family dispute involving the seller .
I also purchased a dual cab syncro from the same vw family with a recond gearbox with a new crown wheel & pinion .Upon dissasembling this gearbox several weeks ago to recover & use the crown wheel plus pinion in a customers gearbox it was found to be Second hand .It had also had the of the pinion shaft cleaned up with a angle grinder .
I dont offer my goods or services on this forum as i would consider this a conflict .
I cannot offer goods at cost prices as i have insurance ,Wages ,Tax ,GST to pay so yes you can choose to buy of the internet for less so a small business like myself has to charge more for the services or parts you cannot find elsewhere to survive .
As a side note i am still waiting to get rich Quick

Thank you for your response,as you know to find a vw syncro expert is very hard and one has to really look around to find one who 1 can have confidence in , please do not take offence from my post ,as far as  i can find out that there is no one in Sydney who works on them now, i know the company that you refer to as i have used them in the past.

All I can say is I am sorry that you had such a bad experience.  I feel bad since I introduced Ron to the group in good faith.  I will be seeing him shortly and will speak to him about these issues but I would say the damage has been done,

Neil.

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers,

Skot

It had to happen 3rd and 4th gear has started to make noises who would you recommend for repairs in Sydney, Paul and Steve Muller no longer do them, i have talked to Dunhams in Wollongong they do any history about this company?
Contacted Racetrans in Kempsey sounds like he knows what he is about, long drive, but shorter than Bribie Island.
Any information appreciated.
I talked to Bug wreckers 95341077 in Sydney he has stripped down Syncro boxes and parts in his shop so if you need parts he might be worth a phone call.
