gear selecting

hi all starting to have a bit of trouble selecting first gear, And jumping out of gear at idle/crawl speed, seems to be jumping out of first, second reverse, reverse only when going down drive way slightly steep, any thougts

Andy,

As Syncros age, this is usually a result of an accumulation of lost motion due to wear in the many parts of the shift linkage.  Ken Garratt did a lot of work on the plastic slippers on the fork under the shift lever and made a considerable improvement to his Syncro.

Thanks for this conversation.
My Syncro sometimes shifts perfectly, but then there are times it will not go straight into first.
Jumping out of gears was cured when Michael Newton rebuilt the box.
It was forever jumping out of first and reverse, on steep hills, something you do not need off road.
The box lost a lot of it's slickness, but that was better than what it was.

I also have high mileage 2WD T3 where engaging reverse is like picking the melbourne cup winner out of a hat.
This one is not a problem short term as it is not registered and is one of two cars that will be turned into one good one next year.

I'd like to hear more about what others have done.

Peter

yes on the shift linkage..

but 'jumping out of gear' ..that is always a bad sign in a VW transaxle.
how many miles on it since it was new or last rebuilt ?

it's a bit of work ..but you could put in first, undo the linkage from the side of the trans..
then go drive in 1st gear and see if it still pops out.

Synco transmissions can like frequent rebuilds, relatively speaking.
if it has say 130,000 miles or more on it, it's due.

I even had one rebuilt this year that was not that bad driving ..
we were doing an engine rebuild anyway, and the new owner had the $ so he said do trans too.
Even though it drove pretty well ..
it was not actually are rebuildable core, the transaxle  !
