gear selector grease

Hello Is there a special grease to be used when re greasing the gear selector under the vehicle and can you re grease without removing the black box? Thanks Greg

I reckon you can’t do better than molybdenum disulphide. Molly as it is known in the trade is extremely sticky ie not thrown off easily.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Greg,

What I do when I grease the linkage....Remove the spare wheel, get the matress from the sun lounge, get a 10 mm socket with long extension, then ly down, take the cover off ,
re-grease the linkage, relax a bit and look around...it's interesting what you see and very comfy under there and you don't have to do the dishes....
You migth see that the steering rod is shiny because it touches the coolant hose, so you might do something , to pevent it from doing that....you might check the ends of the coolant pipes, if the coolant rubber hoses where they go over the pipes start to bulge you discovered a sign of failure here, and you have to keep an eye on that.
Take your time under that car, it is YOUR time, and before finally creeping out don't forget to put that cover back on and put that spare wheel back, of course after you have checked the tyre pressure.  Have a great time---it's one of my treasured places...

Greg,

Yeah this cavity under is a mens special place, get in there on your back on a comfy folded blanket or mattress replete with head torch and just lie back ... marvel at all the interesting things happening in that space.

If you've never had that shift mechanism housing off ever, well you're duty bound to go the whole hog and take it off as Hartmut said and eyeball the internals ... fascinating, especially when you juggle the bottom end of the gear lever around and up an down to see what happens. A concern is that it has been said that the 2 x opposing bushings on the bottom end of the gear lever are NLA for many years now ... these bushings do the rubbing/sliding against the inside of the housing/selector plates and if they are worn out or missing ... your gear changing gets sloppier/problematic. I did describe way back a fix for this but you may be lucky .... keeping all the moving parts and surfaces well greased will help smooth the gear change and help with longevity.

VW says to use MOS2 grease, part no. G 000 602, just google it but seems to be molybdenum disulphide grease as Tom said.

Now if you have been inside that housing previously and know where the important surfaces are that need the grease and you just want to re-grease those surfaces and the bushings, I seem to recall the last time I did it, I just got right in that space, laying on my back, replete with head torch and an old round longish handelled paint brush, ladelled plentiful grease on the brush, craned my head as high as I could get to look into the top of the housing (with head torch) and poked the laden brush inside then painted the grease around liberally. You subsequently may notice an improvement later when you shift the gear lever.

The other thing worth checking while you're in there is the heater hose coolant cut-off gate, its up high next to the big electric radiator fan. I found mine, though OFF at the dash control lever, was still partially open, which may partly explain why the van gets hotter in summer and for those who have it, the a/c has to fight that extra cabin heat as well. So far I've not looked into adjusting the heater cabling to get it to fully close that gate, I've simply manually pulled the end of the heater cable mechanism at the gate to the fully closed position at the cut-off gate and left it alone for now. Avoid moving the heater lever on the dash or you'll have to get under and re-do it.

Happy maintenance. Cheers.

Ken

Les, thanks for that all in BLUE  my favorite colour. I wanted to include what I did, Taking the little book  JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL and reading it possibly for the 3rd time

because nobody disturbs me under the Syncro. Poor Greg, now he thinks I'm completely  adversely affected by sunstroke next to the river. Sorry Greg as one goes along one

learns by ones mistakes, and I did make many on my travels.... i.e. if you have the wheel off for wheel rotation, check the break linings, check the wheel bearings for excessive

play and the list goes on...whatever comes to mind....  Hartmut

Thanks Ken

I will go for the grease with a with a brush as you suggest.

I know what your saying about the heater in Summer.

I attacked it from the other end under the dash but could not find an adjustment for the heater cable. I closed it shut manually and made a small cardboard cover to block the vent outlet. Which will only stay closed as long as I dont turn on the heater. Greg

Theo,
The only fix I've heard about but not actually eyeballed was done by a local VW mechanic to a friends T3 2WD Transporter.

Whatever the actual space in mm that the bush takes up ie., the distance between the end of the gear lever and the inside of the metal gear selector housing, he substituted a similar thickness of sheet material cut from a heavy duty container/drum. Sheeting was first cut to shape to match the internal surfaces of the metal housing wherever the bushes would normally rub. The sheeting was then fastened into place with pop rivets.

Otherwise, if someone knows of any substitute bushes and their supply source, please let us all know. TIA.
Cheers.
Ken

Phill,
Thanks for the response. Are you referring to 251 711 207 E ? If so, searching Etka recognises that part but I haven't found it yet on a schematic diagram. For that matter, I'm unclear on the part number that the mechanic couldn't source. Anyone?
Cheers.
