Gearbox main shaft

My 1990 Syncro is in need of a new main shaft.
Does anyone have one, know where I can source one or have a spare gearbox lying around the garage?
Van currently sitting in the repair shop waiting for a solution.
Has anyone replaced the Syncro gearbox with a standard T3 box?

have not done it but members here have used a 2wd t3 box to get them back on the road while they rebuild the 4x4 box
The syncro shifter might be an issue not sure
subarugears does a syncro conversion

Mmmm.

Thats good stuff those gears from Gears.

But Leigh - I would recommend you extract your gearbox and send it to Rudi and Bribie Island.

He will rebuild your box back to good as new.

I wouldn't recommend anything else.

Thanks for your thoughts on my gearbox.
I have an excellent mechanic who has looked after the vehicle since 1995.
I would like to keep this fantastic vehicle in running order with the original parts.

If I need to fit a standard gearbox as a temporary measure, has someone done this and did the mounting cause any problems?

Ideally I need to find a main shaft.

I have the opposite view, considering the age of these vehicles I am amazed at just what is still available. And considering the small production run of the syncro.

True I guess when you think that way!

Was talking to my mechanic last night, he mentioned VW (locally) is stopping supply on a lot of T4 parts now, so they will be harder to get parts for in future also.
