Gearbox oil capacity

Having just moved house, I have about a hundred archive boxes of books
waiting to go into the bookshelves when they are installed. I thought
that I had put Bentleys aside but, probably due to brain fade, I can't
find it and it is presumably amongst the one hundred!

Can someone please give me the oil capacity of the gearbox? I need to
get it up to a safe level before it goes out for the decoupler
installation. The owners handbook helpfully tells me that it never
needs topping up and doesn't bother with such trivia as capacity.

Thanks

Les
Hey Les

Hope things fall back into working order for you. My van and repair
manuals are temporarily on holidays again with the guy doing the
conversion. But try this website:

http://www.syncro.org/Oils.htm

It also has interesting references regarding Redline as an aftermarket
oil.

Have had my first two trips now with the van with it's new roof - how
cool are t3 syncro's!

Hi Les,

The syncro transmission uses 4L of oil - ie when it is totally empty.
This would be so in your case when installing the decoupler. Normally
if one drains the gearbox some oil remains in the output shaft
housing and the drained quantity is about 3.6L.

If you do not want to completely change the oil, simply remove the
housing and collect the oil (about 2.5L) - the rest of the oil
remains in the gearbox, then after installing the decoupler top up
with drained oil.

It would probably be better to do a fresh change of oil. (ie remove
drain plug and output shaft housing.) - I used Red Line MT90.

Enjoy your decoupler. I use mine only when doing sharp manoeuvres on
hard pavements.

Yurik,

Thanks for the response.  Sam replied a bit earlier and gave me a link to the Syncro.org site which has it all listed.

I have an oil weep and I need to top up before I use it again.  I had the choice of pulling the front cover off to seal it or getting the decoupler fitted.  Later this week it is going to Volkspower to have it fitted and I need to be assured that it has adequate oil in the interim.

Like you, I anticipate that I will use the decoupler only for tight manoeuvres on dry bitumen - run it engaged otherwise.

Don't forget!

Unlike most cars do not fill to the bottom of the filler hole. (10mm below)

Phill,

Thanks for that.  I wondered if the filler hole was a reliable guide but couldn't find any information on that.

I have had a weep from the front cover since I bought it two years ago and hadn't done anything about it.  The weep increased recently so I knew that I had to fix it and soon.  Since I have a decoupler, the logical move was to get the decoupler fitted but I wasn't sure what quantity of oil was left in the box.

The outcome was that it backed it up onto the ramps and added oil until it reached the bottom of the filler hole.  Given that the vehicle was substantially nose down, I estimated that it was at a safe level to drive.  It would be in the range of 10 - 20mm below the hole.
