Gearbox Oil Temperature Gauge

Thanks for the great tips on an engine oil pressure gauge. Now the next issue is, has anyone installed an oil temp gauge in their gearbox? Another help in managing our vehicles.

Hi Peter,

Not something I have done but have researched quite a bit in the past. From memory the least invasive method is to replace the drain plug with a screw in temp sensor. VDO make a suitable model. The only downside is that you lose the magnetic core on the stock drain plug.

If you have the gearbox out then tapping an additional port would probably be another option. I have read about people who have tapped holes to fit gearbox cooler systems.

As an aside, thanks for all the blog updates from your trip to Europe. Thoroughly enjoyed reading each one.

Jon.

A non invasive option would be a cyl head temp gauge, it can go under a bolt or even epoxy to the case some where. Would not give an exact oil temp, but will give a good "relative" temp to monitor and is non invasive

I have a couple of these on air cooled VW's.

With the oil cooler (engine), are they worth the effort if the cooling system is working correctly? The factory cooler should keep engine oil temps in check?
