Gearbox prices

Hi, anybody know what a used syncro gearbox (6p) in good working order
sells for. I'm ordering diff locking boxes from overseas so once I
receive them I won't need the rear or front box. What about a good
vc's? I have no idea as I never see these parts for sale in australia
for an idea.

Jumping back a few posts. I said I'd removed the air conditioner from
my car.Turns out it doesn't get cold. Think it'll go in the bin along
with the gas conversion that nobody wants.

cheers
erik
Hi Erik,

What year is the Syncro gear box?

Hi Eric

I am having my gearbox rebuilt in Perth and it is costing me about $2,500. Don't know if that helps you with getting an idea of pricing.

Can you tell me where your getting your diff locking box from?

syncro spares in the uk sells locking boxes. If your interested he
posts on the club 80/90's syncro forum. Think he was asking around
1250gbp for a locking gearbox front and rear including all parts
needed for the conversion and in a box. I know shipping costs vary
between 300-400 pounds which includes courier pickup. then there's
packaging costs plus 10% custom duty and 10%gst on arrival so around
the $3500-$4000 aussie $ mark all up

Erik,

i would not even think of selling my gearbox! Put it in storage and be
happy to have one in spare. No price in the world will save you the
pain in the future, when these thing have become rare like melon-sized
diamonds!

Erik,

Martin is making a very practical point, to which can be added that some gearbox parts are no longer available form VAG.

Having a functioning gearbox and front diff in stock, albeit used, is probably the world's best insurance policy for a Syncro owner.

Erik,

My name is Nick Bellgrove and I also live in Adelaide. If it is not too late I would like to take a look at the gas conversion unit you are getting rid of. Does your vehicle still run the MV water boxer / or has it been swapped for something else ? I am interested in seeing your vehicle and comparing its performance as I am not sure if mine is running as it should.

Please let me know if the stuff is still available.

Thanks.

Hi Erik,

Can you confirm that your gearbox diff and V/C are still for sale in a few weeks time when your new parts arrive. Have you fixed your price you are asking for them. I am only enquiring Erik as there have been posts advising you to keep them, and I need to know where I stand as you have given me first refusal, but if you have decided not to sell I can start to look elsewhere.
Look forward to your reply.

Tony

Hi tony. Yes don't wait around for my gearbox or vc. I don't know when i'll have my new gearbox it may be significantly longer than I'd anticipated! It would seem stupid to part with a spare gearbox and I have thought to hang onto it in case the worst happens. Selling the gearbox off was a financial idea to recoup some money but a few members here have convinced me it's wiser to hang onto it!

Also the air conditioner and gas conversion are long gone too. A mate has already taken them off my hands. Was told the air conditioner is pretty well buggered.

Hi nick.

My car is in bits at the moment. After removing the air conditioner and gas conversion I have a short somewhere. To add to the problem the starter motor doesn't work. I was told it had been overhauled when I bought it but after having an auto electrician check it out it seems it wasn't a job well done.. I have a freshly rebuilt (apparently. no receipts) dj 2.1wbx so it should be running at optimum so you can take it for a drive once it's going to compare. Gas conversion is gone sorry.
What it costs to repair or rebuild (two different things) a gearbox will depend on what parts have to be replaced, whether those parts are still available from VAG, where they are sourced if they aren't, who is doing the work and probably half a dozen other factors.  There is not a single answer.  It's a how long is a piece of string question.

If you can get it repaired for 2500 let me know where at too! To have a gearbox rebuilt where I'm at costs $4000+. This is actually how I ended up with the syncro. Previous owner couldn't afford to fix it.

P.S. There's a syncro on ebay now with a freshly reconditioned gearbox starting at $4000...

search for either synchro with the H or transporter.
If an advertiser spells Syncro with an 'H', it is fairly sure that he knows nothing about Syncros.  The message is beware.

Ken is the one who usually finds Syncros for sale and notifies the group.  Ken, are you there?
