Gearbox Recondition

Well at last I can report that the gearbox in my van has had a welcome rebuild. The story is that Hartmut (my beloved father in law and learned member of this group) borrowed the van while we were away recently and suggested that as it had done nearly 200,000 km and the clutch felt like it was on the way out, it was time to bite the bullet and get the box looked at.

After much trouble because of that clutch cylinder bracket we obtained the help of a local expert VW mechanic and got the box out. I took it up to Ron Schmidt at Kempsey who runs a small business called Racetrans. He was absolutely wonderful, He did the most professional job and I would recommend him to anyone with a Syncro or T3 who wants gearbox work done.

Now for the details for those interested. The clutch was on the way out and we had a badly leaking slave cylinder. Numerous rubber boots were split. Ron will not take a box apart unless you are there or at least he will not do any work until he shows you the parts that need replacing.

In my case the major issue was a damaged and pitted pinion and a pitted 1st and second gear shaft. The only crown wheel and pinion for a syncro that Ron could find was a race quality Albins unit that he had to import from the USA. Very costly but high quality. He also got a reconditioned shaft. All the gears were fine and have been reused. Ron replaced a number of oil seals, races and bearings including the big one and the synchro rings. I sourced a clutch kit and a slave cylinder from Tooleys and a few other bits and pieces from Just Kampers and GoWesty. After a team effort with our VW mechanic, we got the box back in and I ran some cheaper oil for two days as recommended by Albins. Hart and I then put in Ron's favourite Castrol Syntrax oil. Slight adjustment on the gear linkage and she is working like a charm.

The main purpose of this post, other than for interest to anyone who likes to hear about our machines being kept on the road, is to give credit to Ron Schmidt for a thoroughly professional job. He is like a surgeon when it comes to gearboxes!!!! I cannot recommend him too highly.

Peter from Port

Peter. Agreed , Ron is the best. He did have a fully rebuilt syncro box with diff lock sitting on his shelf a couple of months ago. Most likely the only one available in australia. Do you know if he's still got it. May interest someone. Bill.

It has been some years since I last spoke with Albins but we had an arrangement whereby we (Syncro_T3_Australia) could buy direct from Albins instead of instead of going through a chain of middlemen, here and overseas, each of whom added a mark-up.

Classic Parts might be stocking some C&P for the Syncro but I would have to check on that.

All this is a bit late for you but it might help someone else.

Les

Albin gears are in Ballarat Victoria. It's ridiculous to have to import their product. It also greatly increases their carbon footprint, shipping to the USA and then back again. Common sense needs to be applied here.
Anyway back to the main focus of your post. I have heard nothing but good things about Ron Schmidt and look forward to the day I can get my gearbox rebuilt by the good doctor. (260Ks and still going).

As mentioned in a previous post, I negotiated direct purchase with their sales manager several years ago.

Fellow Syncro Tankers from Melbourne,

An update from Ian is that the extra cost of sending the Melbourne
Syncro nutters shipment to Melbourne is $100.

Would you guys be happy to split this cost and how many Tank / ladder
buyers are from Melbourne area?

Please advise by Sunday as Ian needs to know before Monday.

Thanks,

Scott
Hell yeah. Will I need to do anything re the import/customs? Do I pick up from the port or do they deliver?

Greg,

I am aiming to send to an address but Ian will be sending me some paperwork which may mean some customs requirements.

I am awaiting that detail and will advise ASAP.

Any other Victorians in on that?

Cheers,

Skot

It is possible for a single shippimg agent to process multiple shipments to multiple destinations, but each shipment will incur separate costs for this service.
Once a shipment has been unpacked from it's container it must be picked up within a couple of days.
It is possible for you to arrange with a cartage contractor to pick up your consignment from the container terminal, but he needs your customs cleared paperwork to obtain release.
The cartage is an extra cost.

This is not as easy as EBay or Amazon.

Hope this helps,
Peter

Greg,

Give me an address to send to so that I can give it to Ian.

I know that Steve Clarke is also keen but if you know whether any of the others are from Melbourne - let me know. Here is the list:

1) Steve Clark - 2 tanks plus fitting kits - 1 fuel 1 water (RHS

3) Roger Bayley - 2 tanks plus fitting kits - 1 fuel 1 water (RHS

7) Richard Beckers (almost a member) - 1 tank with custom fittings plus
fuel fitting kit (i.e. 2 extra straps) (RHS custom - 58L) = $500 + $190
+ $60 = $750.00
8) Scott Pitcher - 1 tank plus fuel fitting kit (RHS offset for VIN -

Latest list of Ladders etc:
1) Greg Esposito - 1 central mount ladder with 1 jerry can holder = $200

2) Peter Schweinsberg - 1 central mount ladder with 2 jerry can holders
= $200 + $75 + $75 + $40 + $20 + $20 = $430.00
3) Roger Bayley - 1 Right hand side mount ladder = $200 + $40 = $240.00
