gearbox transplant

Hello to all, because of finances, i am considering transplanting a second hand 5 speed box to replace original box in my 91 syncro(it has died a horrible death). Can someone tell me if it will drop staight in ,and will the ratios be acceptable, thaks greg

Greg,

Before considering the 2WD path, tell us what has happened to your gearbox.   Since, from memory, you are in Queensland , you are within cooee of Rudy Purkhart on Bribie Island , so a rebuild or parts aren’t too far away.

It is also possible to find a second hand box from time to time, so you have some options but tell us what the core problem is.

Greg,   very sad news, a Syncro box, something so special, when you lose it, it's to me like losing a 4 leg member of the family.

Greg, the little adsvise I can offer, is not to turf it, because I have been there, after I had mine "fixed" for huge sums of $$$  near Murwillumba it committed suicide, or so I thought.

On Ken's advice I took it to Bribie Island where miracles were performed. And that for many less $$$ than the first attempt.

yes the 5 speed box will fit with a little modification, the mounts at the nose cone are different, so either modify the van to take the 5speed, or adapt the syncro nose cone to fit the 5 speed box.
the ratios wont matter as there will be no propshaft, the wheels will all rotate at the same speed.
if you really wanted you can fit the diff lock to the 5 speed box (if you have one)
cheers jon

This is a fine bus and is the only other 16 inch RHD syncro DOKA in Oz I understand. Plus Jon has made it very special despite doing all the work with a dodgy back.

I want to see this bus driving although low bridge/ underpass/ tunnels could be a problem.

Jon,

Membership not necessary as I was able to read your blog. It might interest you to know that the Tristar pic you used as a side view sample appears to have Swedish aftermarket alloy gates. The gates on your 6" are the correct factory pieces. IMHO, they are more valuable and more aesthetically pleasing.

I suppose I am biased because my own Syncro 16 Doka is the same color and is in the process of getting the same alloy gates as yours installed. It also sports a Vindic canopy such as the one on your Doka. Mine has the plain vanilla rear seat bench. I did recently have a 4th door installed ala' Tristar.

Hi Greg,

Just confirming yes 5 speed will fit, but modified mount is required. I almost went down this path last year but found a good option was to get a syncro box in from the UK. See that discussion in the archives and all the help and advice from people who had already done this.

Hi Greg,

Before you give up on your gearbox you might like to give Ron Schmidt a call.  He is in Kempsey NSW.  If you can afford the parts you can afford his labour.  Ron has good access to parts including Albins.  He has the proper VW factory tools and no job is impossible.  He will build your box as mild or wild as you like.  His number is 0428 625 730,

Neil.

Neil, have you had a box built by Ron,or do you know someone?I have learnt that he has built strong boxes for offroad buggys.
I dont think he works on cars full time,as locals up there tell me he works at the brickworks, apparently he had a garage once upon a time.

Hi Ben,

He does also have a day job but he has an awesome workshop behind his house where he builds race buggies and specializes in VW and Albins gearboxes.  He used to have a workshop somewhere else years ago but closed that and moved the workshop to his backyard.  He has done my gearbox about three times; because he is so obliging and so affordable I can afford to keep changing my mind on diff ratios.  He has also done custom work for me.   He is open to any kind of custom ideas but will build a bog stock box if that is what you want.  I have no hesitation in recommending him.  The only thing is you need to get your gearbox to him.  If you take it there yourself on a Saturday he will strip it while you are there and you can see what you are up for straight away,

Neil.

Hi Ben,

For the benefit of newer members, Albins is a gear manufacturing company based in country Victoria that makes VW and Porsche gears for competition use.   They export a huge volume to the US every week.   They manufacture a range of ratios that fit the Syncro 094 box.   Their gears are noted for being very robust.

Greg. I'll second, third and fourth Ron Schmidt in kempsey. He's a top shelf gearbox man. A legend up here on the mid north coast. When you meet him you'll see how passionate he is about vw gearboxes. He did my syncro box. It's as smooth as butter and as Neil say's the bonus is he's very reasonable. I also ran a 2wd 5 speed in my syncro for a while. You need the front gearbox mount from the 2wd and modify it to lower the nose about an inch or so to make it fit. Good luck. Bill Sullivan. Nambucca Heads
Thanks for the recomendation Neil, sounds like a good alternate repairer with plenty of experience.I will try to catch up with him again next time I am up there.I have been to his place at South Kempsey, but he wasnt home the day I called in.
