German Syncro 16" driver is greeting...

Hi folks,

i just want to send some nice greetings from germany to australia. If
you want to, you can take a look at www.syncro-experts.de/photo/

we, my girlfriend and me, are driving both syncros.

My syncro is a 16" Syncro with audi´s 5-Zylinder turbodiesel engine. My
girlfriend has a 14" Syncro, fitted with 16" wheels and a 90 HP TDI-
machine.

Feel free to write me?!

Have a nice day,

Dirk
Dirk,

Thanks for making contact with the Australian Syncronauts. I have
looked at all of your pictures and they are very good. They tell
many stories! It is always good to see picture collections that
include the people, not just the vehicles. In your case, they also
include the dogs. Good stuff.

We have a German couple amongst our members. They are Joachim and
Jasmin, they live in south west Germany, and they toured all of
Australia in their ex-police Syncro. They bought it as a bare van
and converted it themselves into a very competent camper. Their
direct e-mail is:

Dear Les,

thanks for your nice welcome-mail. Our dog is the white shepard. I am
the person running around with the cowboy hat.

I noticed it and will contact them today evening. At the moment i am
working on my generaly skilled migration :-) It is quite hart, but i
think thats the only way to stay happy in the job and in free time.

What´s the situation with the syncros in down under. Is it easy to
access spare parts or additional accessories?

Have a nice day,

Dirk

Dirk,

All Syncro owners face the problem of sourcing spares but the amount
of help to be found on the several Syncro sites is very encouraging.

For example, I have been having problems with the Digifant ECU. I
went hunting on the internet and found an excellent description of
the Digifant ECU on the www.volkscafe.com website. An American name
of Jim Schumacher has designed an analyser which reads all the
signals in the ECU and was good enough to publish the operating
manual on the volkscafe website. I am so impressed that i will buy
one for myself in the near future.

For day to day spares, we all rely on specialist workshops around
the country.

Hey cool site Dirk

I've only had my syncro for 2-3 months now and everywhere I go it's
"don't have anything for a vw transporter" "only do air-cooled vw" !!
The only place I can find 40 minutes away is Brookvale Spares and they
seem to charge for these rare parts.

Dirk what is the 120 amp alternator you talk about? Can you tell me
what car it's off or part numbers? Does it fit pretty easy? I'm
still looking around for an alternator. The auto electrician said he
would recondition mine for $135 though he thinks it's a 50 amp holden
alternator. I have also read on a website that you can take the 90
amp bosch alternator off a VW Golf or Jetta and swap the pulley off
the transporter alternator and it will fit.

>You do have to replace the diffs to fit diff-locks. But i wonder why

Sorry I meant my van doesn't have the decoupler or diff-locks, and
don't think I'll be getting any of these in the near future :( That's
alright, as I haven't been doing too much serious 4wding except some
steep mud driveways and open paddocks :) Almost bogged once

I'm also looking for the instrument cluster with rpm guage now I
understand that it will fit. Sorry didn't quite understand this:

>Yes you can, you just need a cockpit with a rpm guage. Therefor if
>you do not need the speed gauge you can also use the 2WD cockpit. Pay
>attention to use it from a benzin-car!

PS Have heard from 'the roof guy' and apparently engineer coming soon
to inspect the van and then have the roof conversion done.

:) Sam

Why bother, Transporter parts are much more common here than Golfs?
Similarly enjoyed your photos. Would be interested in a brief story behing the red and green syncros that apparently needed towing out when crossing the stream.
Seems also that you could add something objective on the constant debate on the best engine for a Syncro, given that you have 2 varieties to compare.

(Am currently working in China for about another 2 months so am looking for reading as having to enjoy my syncro vicariously)
Cheers

That´s what i expected. As you might have read, i want to migrate to
australia. Therefor i have to take a look whether i have to organize
a spare-parts service or not ;-)

I wonder why you do have a 50 amps alternator? The normal diesel-
engine does have 65 amps and the benzin-engines, except the 1,9 liter
engine, have 90 amps. I don´t know from which car it is. I have a
little company next to me, which is dealing with alternators and
starters. Therefor i just told them the specs of the alternator and
they give me the correct one. If you want to i can take a look for
you?! I don´t now how mutch the shipping costs will be, but maybe you
can check it?

Ok, so i know what you mean. First of all, i do not think that you
normaly need a decoupler for the viscou, cause the viscou is one of
the best drive concepts beside audi´s quattro. In my opinion you just
need a decoupler only when you have a broken viscou. But here in
Germany we have to pay 300 euros for a new viscou and about 900 euros
for a decoupler, so why?

If you want to fit some diff-locks it is the easiest why to change
the whole powertrain. Here in Germany it is quite easy. Just buy a
syncro, cull it and use the parts you need. The other stuff will be
seld in ebay :-) If you want to i can also take a look for it! I
think you have to spent round about 800 euros for the rear-gear and
the fron diff including diff-locks and the pneumatic wirering.

Ok, you want the instrument-cluster with rpm-gauge... It is quite
hard to find one from a syncro. So just take one from a 2WD-
transporter, remove the speed-gauge from that one and fit your syncro
speed gauge to it. Than you have a rpm-gauge and a speed-gauge :-)
The problem is that there is a difference in the speed gauge-ratio
between syncro and 2WD Transporter.

Have a nice day,

That´s what i am also thinking about. But if someone will check the
price for shipping, i can take a look for some parts here in germany if
you want to?

If you want to migrate here (sound like a good idea), I am sure that
the Australian Syncronauts, along with your existing European
contacts, can look after you.

Well, that was a poor action. The green syncro is mine. It has
installed a water-boxer (benzin engine). Through some crossings
before, i had some water in my ignition distributor. When i wanted to
cross the last river i didn´t have enough power and my motor stopped.
The underground was not as hard as i expected. The red syncro wanted
to pull me out. But he didn´t take a look on the water depth. Because
of a deep trench the front of the syncro was catapulted out of the
water and the back sliped back into the trench.

That´s what happend. After this we had to fix severel hours our
engines. I had to change my oil and some relais for the fuel pump.
The red ones was a TDI. He just had to remove some small stones out
of the alternator and timing belt.

> Seems also that you could add something objective on the constant
debate on the best engine for a Syncro, given that you have 2

Well, after this event i discribed, i decided to change the benzin
motor to a diesel engine. I just was looking around. All I wanted was
a quite strong turbodiesel with a mechanical injection pump. I hate
electronic and i hate it mutch more when you have to trust into a
electronical based engine.
The 4-cylinder Turbodiesel with 1,6 liter has not enough power. The
next one is the 1,9 Liter Turbodiesel, fitted into the VW golf III.
This motor has a lot of problems with overheating in the syncro.
The only motor i found was a 5-cyl turbodiesel from the old audi 100,
type 44 (build from 86 to 89). It has 2000 ccm and about 87 hp. With
a intercooler and small modifikation to the injection pump you get
quite easily 120 hp with about 220 NM.
To fit this motor into the syncro you have to arise the engine
compartment. Thats all. For connecting it to the gearbox you can use
the south african´s transmission bell housing.

I really like this engine. It is very powerfull, has a quite strong
character up from the start and is running quite cold.

In my girlfriend´s syncro we installed a 1,9 TDI with 90 HP. This is
our cruising syncro. The TDI is very friendly to drive, has a lot of
power BUT electronic every where. You need a laptop to repair some
essential parts of this engine.

I think the best motor for the syncro is the 5-cyl turbodiesel with
2,0 liters. I will remove the tdi somewhere in the future when the
second 5-cyl is back from the refurbisher.

I realy don´t like benzin motors because of their electronic and also
the sensitivity of leak air. An other point is that a diesel engine
does not need so mutch fuel. Here in germany it is quite expensive.
We started driving with salad-oil!!!
>
> (Am currently working in China for about another 2 months so am

hei, now you have time to think about your new engine-modifications :-
) some minutes ago i was in a sandbox with my girlsfriends tdi. Well
i have to say this motor isn´t as poor as i said above :-) The big
advantage: If you need power, just push the gas. You do not have to
wait till the bigger turbo brings power as it is in the syncros
turbodiesel engine :-)

Thats for now folks,

have a nice evening. We will start a barbecue this evening. I think
it will be the last one for this year. Winter is coming...

See you,

Dirk
