I found the following made interesting reading for me from the US Syncro site.I'm therefore passing it on for those who may have missed it as I'm sure we all go through such moments at times.(Read the last letter first)I think Westies (Westfalia?)transporters are the US fixed hightop VW syncro campervans but I'd stand corrected. Anyone got any thoughts on whether say a new T5 Diesel California syncro(4 motion) is a worthy (better?) successor to our T3's? Are they actually available here in addition to the Kombi Beach which doesn't seem to have received very favourable reviews?
Cheers

You're on the right track asking for folks to talk you out of it. that still
indicates that you're "in it".
There is no other vehicle like the syncro, in particular a westy syncro, but
even as passenger syncro.
Nothing else can turn on a dime, get decent fuel economy, perform admirably
offroad, carry a bunch of gear, friends, family, pets simultaneously, sleep
4 (westy), cook in (westy), park in town, get loads of online support for,
get a myriad of engine options for, get lots of different aftermarket
support for AND (if you still need another reason or two) one that is
beginning the transition into a collectors vehicle, and one that has a sense
of camaraderie and community. nothing except motorcycle and vanagon guys
have a "wave" as far as I know, and to me, this particular sub-culture is as
exciting and fulfilling as the vehicles themselves and the stuff you can do,
and places you can go in them. There is no equivalent, not even marginally
for a vanagon. Although I would take a veyron if the opportunity presented
itself ha
Do yourself a favor and keep it, you'll hate yourself in about 2.5 years if
you don't from what I've read from you. you're a tech, throw an engine
conversion in it and go. raise the potential of the vanagon and eliminate
some of the frustration of having an older, quirky VAG vehicle(although
quirky VAG vehicle is redundant). Do you think that brady spends lot's of
time tinkering on vanagons? No, it's drive it like you stole it, and beat
the crap out of it till it breaks.. push it to it's limits and have a
freakin blast doing it. support your fellow volks, try to solve a few
problems if you can spare the time, effort and coin, and enjoy the fantastic
realities that this combo of human/machine can provide.

Yeah, well here's the kicker. I'm a Master ASE Certified tech that does BMW
and Porsche all day. I have no time M-F to work on it. Frankly I guess I
just don't want to deal with the thing breaking down and I can't see
spending countless hours tinkering around with the thing every weekend to
get it where the other one was. I get in my BMW, turn the key, and it drives
me 1/2 way accross the US without a hitch. That's where I need to be right
now. I agree that there is no other vehicle like the van. It serves it's
purpose great for me. I can take all the kids camping (3), attach the side
tent and have a great time, ride bikes all day and come back, hop in the
side, change out of my wet clothes comfortably and throw the bike inside
when I'm done. Not too many rigs that'll do that so easily. This one has yet
to be as effective at that as my last one. Was I just lucky with the other
one? Yes and no. I spent who knows how much to get it really nice but it was
pretty damn good to begin with. Not once in all those years, several of
which it was a daily driver, did it EVER leave me stranded, nor did it break
down at all. I'm seriously thinking Eurovan weekender, but I'd rather have
the unavailable in US Syncro model (of course!). What a quandry.
