Go Roger Bell!

Hi Roger,

I hope you don't mind me sharing this Age video with your Syncro mates, who might be chuffed to see you exercising your democratic right to free speech. Totally in sympathy with you, and but for a horror statistics exam this morning I would have braved the rain along with you. Also most impressed by your challenge to the premier! Perhaps if he drove around in a Syncro he might have finer sensitivities towards cyclists....

Best,

Francesca.

There probably aren’t many active cyclists in the Syncro ranks but I will mention something that I encounter frequently – helmets being worn as a fashion accessory.   It is alarming to see how many people haven’t got any idea of how they have to fit to offer any protection – limited as it is.  Not infrequently and particularly amongst women, I see helmets being worn at such an angle of tilt back that a simple fall could well result in a broken neck!!

But, in a country where people drink bottled water by the truckload and pay more for it than petrol, who could be surprised?
Les

Your my hero Roger. The only way you could have done better in my eyes would have been to throw rocks at the mug directly.
Only an idiot would cut pennies from bike spending to spend milions on band aid measures to keep cars in the city. Short sighted to say the least.
Phill, you can add Alice and I to the list. Alice rides to work rain, hail or shine and I get the kids around on one of these.
Doing the Roubaix on the weekend with Gary Cookson (fellow syncro nutter and cyclist). Should be fun.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments-of course Francisca I didn't mind you sharing it with our group as I know many of them are similarly inclined. Indeed a bike on the back overcomes that major drawback of a campervan-having to pack up to popdown to the fish and chip shop for the evening meal. Depending on where it happens it also gives you a sporting chance of getting somewhere that you can connect with someone in the event of a major breakdown. I mentioned to someone at the Nationals that Paul carted his bike all the way to Cape York only to find that the corrugations had rattled the quick release axle from one of the wheels when he came to use it.
Also agree Les on your helmet comment. I find myself commenting to sweet young things that their helmet location will do nothing for their frontal lobes in the even of a crash and they just look at me thinking that old codger wouldn't know because he has a "bad hair day" every day. Cyclist behaviour covers the full range much like motorists where there are syncro drivers and they go down from there.
My cycling companion in the video clip has convinced me that we can do the 210km round the bay in a day' in October so we enjoy our fair share of stupidity too. I just hope the weather isn't similar to today. Thinking of ringing our premier and encouraging him to ride with us by offering a subsequent ride in a syncro.
Cheers
Roger
