Go Westy waterboxers.

Does anybody out there have any opinions or any experience with the
rebuilt waterboxers from the U.S company Go Westy? Their website is
www.gowesty.com.Their engine story makes for interesting
reading, particularly to a syncro owner who wants a bit more go from
his van.

Any comments would be appreciated,

Eddie,

I would suggest that you consider the Subaru option, and for several reasons.

The first is that any Wasserboxer conversion is on the basis of an engine that is not only old but no longer in production.  Parts for the 2.1 engine are in short enough supply already, and this will only get worse.  Consider also that the modifier is on the other side of the planet, working in $US.

A big reason is that Subaru has always been well represented in Australia and there is an ample supply of parts.  The most commonly used engine is the 2.2 and there is even a company in Queensland that does conversion kits.  I thought that I had put the link on the website but obviously haven't.  I will do it this weekend.  We have several list members who have used this engine, some of whom might respond to your posting.  I suspect that the reliability of this engine would be better than the Wasserboxer, modified or not.

Moving up the chain, the Subaru 2.5 is a recent design and has bags of power.  It should amply satisfy anyone's desire for more go.  Andy, in Ceduna, South Australia, has recently fitted one.  (Andy, it's time for a report from you.)  If I went to Subaru, this is the engine that I would use.

Parts are in short supply?

I bet that in five years time it is still easier to get Wasserboxer parts than Subaru. Volkswagen still produce parts many years after the vehicle has been discontinued.
